Minnesota 2013-14 Flu Season Wks 44-29, 1 New Pediatric Death, 2 Total
During the week ending in November 2, 2013 (Week 44), surveillance indicators showed sporadic geographic spread of influenza. There were 3 influenza-related hospitalizations reported. Since the start of the influenza season, 0 pediatric (less than 18 years of age) influenza- related deaths have been identified. Influenza activity remains low.
There have been 3 hospitalizations this week and 11 total (to date); median age: 76.1 years.
Geographic spread of influenza: Local
Influenza activity is increasing
There were 4 influenza-related hospitalizations reported this week, 6 last week and total to date is 27. Six were Influenza B, one was A & B; the rest were all Influenza A. Median age: 62.8
Since the start of the influenza season, 0 pediatric (less than 18 years of age) influenza- related deaths have been identified.

During the week ending in January 4, 2014 (Week 1), surveillance indicators showed WIDESPREAD geographic spread of influenza. There were 144 influenza-related hospitalizations reported. Influenza activity continues to increase. Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 has been the most commonly identified strain in Minnesota so far this season.

Four influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported to CDC during week 29. Three deaths were associated with an influenza A virus for which no subtyping was performed and occurred during weeks 5, 18, and 23 (weeks ending February 1, May 3, and June 7, 2014). One death was associated with an influenza B virus and occurred during week 18 (May 3, 2014). A total of 105 influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported during the 2013-2014 season.
