    Influenza Activity Surveillance
    The percentage of tests positive for influenza during week 45 as reported from the MN Lab System (MLS) Laboratory Influenza Surveillance Program
    rapid influenza testing: 5.8%
    PCR testing: 2.4%
    Viral culture: no positives
    The most commonly cultured strain identified so far this season at the MDH Public Health Laboratory is influenza B/Victoria lineage.
    2 people were hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza during week 45. Since the start of the influenza season, 17 persons have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza.
    No deaths were identified during week 45. Since the start of the influenza season, no influenza-related deaths have been reported.
    No long-term care facilities (defined as a skilled nursing facility) reported a confirmed outbreak of influenza during week 45. Since the start of the season, 1 outbreak of influenza in long-term care has been reported.
    3 schools reported outbreaks of influenza-like illness (ILI) during week 45. Since the start of the season, 5 outbreaks of ILI in schools have been reported.
    The percentage of influenza-like illness visits to outpatient clinics involved U.S. Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance (ILINet) was below the regional baseline at 0.49%.

    Circulating Respiratory Pathogen Surveillance
    Of specimens tested from 3 outpatient sites for circulating viral respiratory pathogens in the previous 3 weeks for which data are available:
    33% were positive for rhinovirus
    4% were positive for adenovirus
    4% were positive for parainfluenza virus 2
    2% were positive for parainfluenza virus 3

            65 people were hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza during week 50. Since the start of the influenza season, 165 persons have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza.
            1 death was identified during week 50. This is the first influenza-related death reported since the start of the influenza season.
            6 long-term care facilities (defined as a skilled nursing facility) reported confirmed outbreaks of influenza during week 50. Since the start of the season, 11 outbreaks of influenza in long-term care have been reported.
            47 schools reported outbreaks of influenza-like illness (ILI) during week 50. Since the start of the season, 77 outbreaks of ILI in schools have been reported.

                          Although the sentinal provider ILI data would suggest a significant drop in ILI, the outbreaks in long-term care centers and school has risen sharply. Hospitalizations remain elevated.

                            65% were positive for influenza, of these

                            17% were positive for influenza B
                            4% were postivie for influenza A (subtype undetermined)
                            6% were positive for rhinovirus
                            2% were positive for coronavirus OC43
                            1% were positive for parainfluenza virus 2

                            Of specimens positive for a viral pathogen at Minnesota’s 6 virology laboratories during week 3:
                            40 were positive for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
