Re: Minnesota 2012-13 Season: Weeks 45-5 (15 New Deaths; Total 127)
week 5: Widespread
15 new deaths; total 127
The percentage of tests positive for influenza during week 5 as reported from the MN Lab System (MLS) Laboratory Influenza Surveillance Program
rapid influenza testing: 18.6%
PCR testing: 20.7%
Viral culture: 2 influenza A positives, 7 influenza B positives
The most commonly cultured strain identified so far this season at the MDH Public Health Laboratory is influenza A/H3.
108 people were hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza during week 5. Since the start of the influenza season, 2,612 persons have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza.
15 deaths were confirmed during week 5. Since the start of the influenza season, 127 influenza-related deaths have been confirmed.
1 long-term care facility (defined as a skilled nursing facility) reported a confirmed outbreak of influenza during week 5. Since the start of the season, 136 outbreaks of influenza in long-term care have been reported.
19 schools reported outbreaks of influenza-like illness (ILI) during week 5. Since the start of the season, 434 outbreaks of ILI in schools have been reported.
The percentage of influenza-like illness visits to outpatient clinics involved in the U.S. Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance (ILINet) was above the regional baseline at 1.84%.
Circulating Respiratory Pathogen Surveillance
Of specimens tested by PCR from 3 outpatient sites for circulating viral respiratory pathogens in the previous 3 weeks for which data are available:
63% were positive for influenza, of these
89% were positive for influenza A/H3
6% were positive for influenza B
3% were postivie for influenza A (subtype undetermined)
2% were positive for influenza A/H1
11% were positive for coronavirus, of these
55% were positive for coronavirus OC43
36% were positive for coronavirus NL63
9% were positive for coronavirus HKU1
6% were positive for rhinovirus
4% were positive for human metapneumovirus
5% were positive for parainfluenza, of these
60% were positive for parainfluenza virus 2
40% were positive for parainfluenza virus 3
1% were positive for adenovirus
1% were positive for respiratory synctial virus (RSV)
Of specimens culture positive for a viral pathogen at Minnesota?s 6 virology laboratories during week 5:
31 were positive for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
7 were positive for influenza B
6 were positive for adenovirus
2 were positive for influenza B
2 were positive for cytomegalovirus (CMV)
1 was positive for rhinovirus
1 was positive for parainfluenza virus 2
1 was positive for parainfluenza virus 3
