Deceased Hillsdale County man had H1N1 influenza

    The Enquirer ? October 28, 2009

A 53-year-old Hillsdale County man was found to have H1N1 influenza, also known as swine flu, at the time of his death.

Steve Todd, health officer for the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency, said the man went to Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall for an unrelated medical condition.

The man was tested for H1N1 after he died about a week ago and was found to have contracted the flu virus.

The proportion of flu-related deaths has been higher than expected for this time of year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is killing pregnant women, children and people with unrelated medical conditions at a higher rate than healthy individuals.

Since April, the CDC has received reports of 95 laboratory-confirmed pediatric deaths in which H1N1 was present and another 7 deaths that were laboratory confirmed as influenza of some type.
