Lansing -- The state's swine flu death toll has reached eight, according to the Michigan Department of Community Health.
The latest death, announced Wednesday on the agency's Web site, is an Oakland County man who who died "earlier this week" after spending three weeks in an unidentified hospital, said Kathy Forzley, manager of the Oakland County Health Division.
Forzley declined to release any details about the man other than to say "he was in his 50s and he did have underlying health conditions" like asthma, obesity or diabetes.
He is the third person in Oakland County to die from the swine flu, which is also known as the H1N1 virus, Forzley said.
"We did see the peak of H1N1 right after Memorial Day. I don't know if that was because it was in the community when people were off and congregating," she said. "It's peaked and now it's tapered off. We are hearing very few reports now (of confirmed and probable cases)."
There are 655 confirmed and probable cases of the swine flu statewide.
