Madison Hts. Officer Dies from Illness
MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. - The Madison Heights Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own. A young officer died after suffering flu-like symptoms.
There is still a little bit of a mystery. We do not have a confirmed cause of death, although health officials believe it to be the swine flu. The 28-year-old officer had a history of some asthma and hypertension, but his brother told us he was generally a pretty healthy person. However, last week, he had to be air lifted to U of M Hospital and has now passed away.
"It's hard. We love him. We're going to miss him, but he's in a better place. He's not sick anymore," said Chris Settlemoir. His older brother, Ryan, died early Friday morning. He had been among more than 20 officers at the department who came down with what is believed to be the H1N1 virus over the last couple of weeks.
At one point, Ryan Settlemoir's doctors thought he had Legionnaire's disease, so the police department's air conditioning system and water supply are being inspected.
"We're doing all that we can to coordinate and to find out exactly what happened," said Madison Heights Police Chief Kevin Sagan.
Health officials now say there is no evidence of Legionnaire's disease and believe Settlemoir died of the H1N1 virus, which is also known as swine flu. He leaves behind a wife, a four-year-old son and twin two-year-old daughters. His family and his department never expected someone so young to be taken so suddenly.
"He was a family man. He loved his kids, loved his wife, my family. He loved his job," Chris Settlemoir said.
"Just a generally nice person," Sagan said.
Visitation for Ryan Settlemoir will be held from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Sunday and 2:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Monday at the Swanson and Son Funeral Home at 30531 Dequindre in Madison Heights. His funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Antioch Baptist Church at 30588 Dequindre in Warren.
A college fund has also been established to benefit Ryan Settlemoir's children. You can make a donation at the People's State Bank located at 1800 East Twelve Mile Road in Madison Heights.
