H1N1 Outbreak In Ann Arbor: ?These Patients Are Very, Very Ill?
    January 2, 2014 7:07 PM

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) ? Health officials at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor say they?re dealing with a severe outbreak of the flu.

A minimum of six people were in the intensive care unit on Thursday, as doctors dealt with what was believed to be multiple cases of H1N1, also know as ?Swine Flu.?

According to Dr. Lena Napolitano, director of the University of Michigan?s Surgical Critical Care and Intensive Care units, several patients ? mostly young or middle-aged ? are not doing well.

?They are on very advanced life support,? Napolitano told WWJ Newsradio 950.

?There are other intensive care units ? our medical ICU, our pediatric ICU ? who also have other patients,? she added.? And I don?t have those exact numbers; but suffice it to say, it is a striking increase, and these patients are very, very ill...?

Severe H1N1 flu cases reported at Michigan hospitals; doctors urge people to get vaccine

Deadly H1N1 flu ? the influenza virus strain behind the 2009 pandemic ? continues its resurgence in Michigan, leading to the deaths of at least one child and three adults, according to state health and hospital officials.

About a dozen adults and children ? patients who previously were healthy ? have been on life support at the University of Michigan Health System?s hospitals due to the virus.

Three adults have died, according to a health system spokeswoman. In December, the state reported that an infant from central Michigan had died from H1N1.

And the University of Michigan Health System reported Monday between 15 and 20 adults and children are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital. MDCH concerned about severe flu activity: Urges individuals to get vaccinated

LANSING ? Influenza activity is on the rise both nationwide and in all regions of Michigan. Public health officials are noticing an increase in patients of all ages being admitted to hospitals for serious influenza disease. To date, a larger proportion of these hospitalizations are occurring in young and middle-age adults as compared with most influenza seasons. In addition, one pediatric influenza-associated death has already been reported in Michigan during this influenza season.

Although the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) does not require reporting of adult influenza deaths, at least six deaths have been reported as of Dec. 21, 2013. Currently, more than 90 percent of positive influenza specimens at the MDCH Bureau of Laboratories are the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. During the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, severe disease was also seen in young and middle-age adults. Patients with underlying medical conditions or obesity have an increased risk for severe complications from this virus.

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Widespread cases of the flu are prompting one hospital in West Michigan to take extra precautions. Borgess Medical Center is limiting visitors, it says, as a proactive safety measure. According to a statement from the hospital, visitors must now be 12 years of age and older, with an exception made to siblings of patients. In addition, visitors to Borgess Critical Care Units, and the Birthing Center are now limited to immediate family only, and only two visitors per patient will be allowed to visit in the Emergency and Trauma Center.

ANN ARBOR: Severe flu striking young healthy people

ANN ARBOR ? More than a dozen adults and children were on life support at the University of Michigan Health System?s hospitals last week, because of flu.

Most are young and otherwise healthy, and were transferred to U-M from other hospitals because their flu was so severe. Most have the H1N1 strain of flu.

And as far as hospital staff can tell, these patients either didn?t get the flu vaccine at all -- or didn?t get it in time to protect them fully. This year?s flu vaccine includes protection against H1N1 flu.

At the same time, a number of other flu patients in less-severe condition are also recuperating in other U-M hospital beds. Hundreds more with flu-like symptoms have sought care in U-M emergency departments and clinics in recent weeks.
