    Week 43, ending Oct. 26

    Michigan Disease Surveillance System (as of October 31): MDSS influenza data for the week ending October 26, 2013 indicated that compared to levels from the previous week, individual reports remained steady at low levels, while aggregate reports slightly increased. Individual reports are similar to levels seen during the same time period last year, while aggregate reports are slightly lower.

    Emergency Department Surveillance (as of October 31): Emergency department visits due to both constitutional and respiratory complaints increased slightly from levels seen during the previous week.
    Emergency department visits from constitutional complaints were similar to levels during the same time period last year, while respiratory complaints were lower. In the past week, there were 10 constitutional alerts in the SW(3), C(4) and N(3) Influenza Surveillance Regions and 5 respiratory alerts in the C(4) and
    N(1) Regions.

    Sentinel Provider Surveillance (as of October 31): During the week ending October 26, 2013, the proportion of visits due to influenza-like illness (ILI) decreased to 0.8% overall; this is below the regional baseline (1.6%). A total of 61 patient visits due to ILI were reported out of 8,069 office visits. Data were provided by 22 sentinel sites from the following regions: Central (9), North, (2), Southeast (8), and Southwest (3). ILI activity decreased in three regions: C (1.3%), N (0.0%), and SE (0.1%) and increased in one region: SW (0.7%). Please note: These rates may change as additional reports are received.

    Hospital Surveillance (as of October 26):As of October 26th, there have been 2 influenza hospitalizations (2 pediatric) within the catchment area.

    Laboratory Surveillance (as of October 26): During October 25-26, 1 positive influenza 2009 A/H1N1pdm result was reported by MDCH Bureau of Laboratories. For the 2013-14 season (starting Sept. 29, 2013), MDCH has identified 5 positive influenza results:
     Influenza 2009 A/H1N1pdm: 4 (4SE)  Influenza A/H3: 1 (1SE)

    Emergency Department Surveillance (as of November 7): Emergency department visits due to respiratory complaints increased slightly from levels seen during the previous week, while constitutional
    complaints remained steady. Emergency department visits from both constitutional and respiratory complaints were similar to levels during the same time period last year. In the past week, there were 6 constitutional alerts in the SW(1), C(4) and N(1) Influenza Surveillance Regions and 4 respiratory alerts in the SW(3) and C(1 )Regions.

    Sentinel Provider Surveillance (as of November 7):
    During the week ending November 2, 2013, the proportion of visits due to influenza-like illness (ILI) increased to 1.2% overall; this is below the regional baseline (1.6%). A total of 108 patient visits due to ILI were reported out of 8,990 office visits. Data were provided by 25 sentinel sites from the following regions: Central (11), North, (3), Southeast (9), and Southwest (2). ILI activity increased in three regions: C (1.6%), SE (0.2%), and SW (0.9%) and decreased
    in one region: N (2.5%).

    Hospital Surveillance (as of November 2):
    No cases were identified during the past week. As of November 2nd, there have been 2 influenza hospitalizations (2 pediatric) within the catchment area.

    Laboratory Surveillance (as of November 2):
    During Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2 influenza 2009 A/H1N1pdm (2SE), 1 A/H3 (1SE) and 1 A unsubtypable (1SE) results were reported by MDCH Bureau of Labs.
    For the 2013-14 season (starting Sept. 29, 2013), MDCH has identified 9 positive influenza results:
    * Influenza 2009 A/H1N1pdm: 6 (6SE)
    * Influenza A/H3: 2 (2SE)
    * Influenza A unsubtypable: 1 (1SE)

Individual reports are similar to levels seen during the same time period last year, while aggregate reports are slightly higher.

      Emergency Department Surveillance (as of November 21): Emergency department visits due to both constitutional and respiratory complaints remained steady during the week ending November 16, 2013. Emergency department visits from both constitutional and respiratory complaints were similar to levels during the same time period last year. In the past week, there were 11 constitutional alerts in the SW(5), C(2) and N(4) Influenza Surveillance Regions and 4 respiratory alerts in the C(2) and N(2) Regions.

      Sentinel Provider Surveillance (as of November 21): During the week ending November 16, 2013, the proportion of visits due to influenza-like illness (ILI) increased to 1.0% overall; this is below the regional baseline (1.6%). A total of 79 patient visits due to ILI were reported out of 7,965 office visits. ILI activity increased in three regions: C (2.0%), SE (0.2%), and SW (0.8%) and remained the same in one region: N (0.0%).

      Hospital Surveillance (as of November 16): No new cases were identified during the past week. As of November 16th, there have been 3 influenza hospitalizations (2 pediatric, 1 adult) within the catchment area.

      Laboratory Surveillance (as of November 16): During November 10-16, 20 influenza 2009 A/H1N1pdm and 2 influenza A/H3 (2SE) results were reported by MDCH Bureau of Laboratories.
      For the 2013-14 season (starting Sept. 29, 2013), MDCH has identified 37 positive influenza results:
      * Influenza 2009 A/H1N1pdm: 29 (19SE,5SW,5C)
      * Influenza A/H3: 4 (4SE)
      * Influenza A unsubtypable: 1 (1SE)
      * Influenza B: 3 (1SE,1SW,1C)

      Michigan Influenza Antiviral Resistance Data (as of November 21): For the 2013-14 season, 7 2009 A/H1N1pdm (7SE) and 1 A/H3 (1SE) influenza specimens have been tested at the MDCH BOL for antiviral resistance.
      None of the influenza specimens tested have been resistant.

      Influenza-associated Pediatric Mortality (as of November 21): No pediatric influenza-associated influenza mortalities have been reported to MDCH for the 2013-14 season.

        Michigan Disease Surveillance System (as of November 27): MDSS Compared to levels from the previous week, both individual and aggregate reports slightly increased. Both individual and aggregate reports are slightly higher than levels seen during the same time period last year.

        Emergency Department Surveillance (as of November 27): Emergency department visits due to both constitutional and respiratory complaints remained steady during the week ending November 23, 2013 and similar to levels during the same time period last year.

        Sentinel Provider Surveillance (as of November 26):
        During the week ending November 23, 2013, the proportion of visits due to ILI increased to 1.2% overall; this is below the regional baseline (1.6%).

The decrease in aggregate reports may be partially due to the school holiday break. Aggregate reports are slightly lower than levels seen during the same time period last year, while individual reports are slightly higher.

          Emergency Department Surveillance (as of December 5):
          Emergency department visits due to constitutional complaints increased during the week ending November 30, 2013, while respiratory complaints remained steady. Emergency department visits from constitutional complaints were similar to levels during the same time period last year, while respiratory complaints were slightly lower. In the past week, there were 13 constitutional alerts in the SE(1), SW(8), C(3) and N(1) Influenza Surveillance Regions and 1 statewide alert and 9 respiratory alerts in the SW(6) and C(3) Regions.

          Sentinel Provider Surveillance (as of December 5): During the week ending November 30, 2013, the proportion of visits due to influenza-like illness (ILI) increased to 1.2% overall; this is below the regional baseline (1.6%). A total of 94 patient visits due to ILI were reported out of 7,840 office visits. Data were provided by 30 sentinel sites from the following regions: Central (14), North, (4), Southeast (8), and Southwest (4). ILI activity increased in three regions: C (1.5%), SE (0.3%), and SW (1.4%) and decreased in one region: N (2.2%).

          Hospital Surveillance (as of November 30):One new adult case was identified during the past week. As of November 30th, there have been 4 influenza hospitalizations (2 pediatric, 2 adult) within the catchment area.

          Laboratory Surveillance (as of November 30): During November 24-30, 19 influenza 2009 A/H1N1pdm and 1 influenza A/H3 results were reported by MDCH Bureau of Laboratories.

          For the 2013-14 season (starting Sept. 29, 2013), MDCH has identified 67 positive influenza results:

              During the past week, one pediatric influenza-associated influenza death, confirmed to be 2009 influenza A/H1N1, was reported in an unvaccinated infant from the C Region. One pediatric influenza-associated influenza mortality (1C) has been reported to MDCH for the 2013-14 season.

              Michigan Disease Surveillance System (as of December 19):
              Aggregate reports are noticeably lower than levels seen during the same time period last year, while individual reports are higher.

              Emergency Department Surveillance (as of December 19):
              Emergency department visits due to constitutional complaints increased slightly during the week ending December 14, 2013, while respiratory complaints remained steady.

              Sentinel Provider Surveillance (as of December 19):
              During the week ending December 14, 2013, the proportion of visits due to influenza-like illness (ILI) remained the same at 1.2% overall; this is below the regional baseline (1.6%).

              During December 8-14, 16 influenza 2009 A/H1N1pdm results were reported by MDCH Bureau of Laboratories. In addition, one specimen positive for both influenza A and B (indicating LAIV recovery) was reported (1SE) and confirmed by CDC.

              For the 2013-14 season (starting Sept. 29, 2013), MDCH has identified 95 positive influenza results:

Data were provided by 25 sentinel sites from the following regions: Central (8), North (3), Southeast (10), and Southwest (4). ILI activity increased in all four regions: C (2.3%), N (2.8%), SE (1.0%), and SW (1.1%).

                Hospital Surveillance (as of December 21):
                13 new cases (8 pediatric, 5 adult) were identified during the past week. As of December 21th, there have been 24 influenza hospitalizations (13 pediatric, 11 adult) within the catchment area.

                Influenza-associated Pediatric Mortality (as of December 26):
                No new pediatric influenza-associated deaths were reported to MDCH during the previous week. One pediatric influenza-associated influenza mortality (1C) has been reported to MDCH for the 2013-14 season.

Emergency department visits from both constitutional and respiratory complaints were similar to levels during the same time period last year. In the past week, there were 19 constitutional alerts in the SE(4), SW(4), C(8) and N(3) Influenza Surveillance Regions and 3 statewide alerts and 16 respiratory alerts in the SE(2), SW(3), C(7) and N(4) Regions and 2 statewide alerts.

                  During the week ending December 28, 2013, the proportion of visits due to influenza-like illness (ILI) increased to 2.8% overall; this is above the regional baseline (1.6%). A total of 156 patient visits due to ILI were reported out of 5,623 office visits. Data were provided by 28 sentinel sites from the following regions: Central (9), North (3), Southeast (12), and Southwest (4). ILI activity increased in all four regions: C (3.3%), N (3.4%), SE (1.9%), and SW (2.7%).

                  Hospital Surveillance (as of December 28):
                  The CDC Influenza Hospitalization Surveillance Projectprovides population-based rates of severe influenza illness through active surveillance and chart review of lab-confirmed cases, starting on October 1, 2013, for Clinton, Eaton, Genesee, and Ingham counties. 13 new cases (5 pediatric, 8 adult) were identified during the past week. One pediatric case reported during a prior week was incorrectly classified and removed from prior counts. As of December 28th, there have been 36 influenza hospitalizations (17 pediatric, 19 adult) within the catchment area.

                  Laboratory Surveillance (as of December 28):
                  During December 22-28, 20 influenza 2009 A/H1N1pdm (1SE,6SW,4C,9N) results were reported by MDCH Bureau of Laboratories. For the 2013-14 season, MDCH has identified 142 positive influenza results:
