Ascension schools report H1N1 influenza cases

The Ascension Parish School Board is reporting that 24 students have been absent from school in recent days because of flu-like symptoms.
That number is up from nine cases of possible influenza or the H1N1 virus reported Wednesday, Superintendent Donald Songy said in a news release.
School Board spokesman Johnnie Balfantz said the school system could not confirm the students have been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus or swine flu, but have information that they are experiencing flu-like symptoms.
He said some parents have reported that the students have been diagnosed with a type of influenza.
The students reporting flu-like symptoms attend Central Middle, Donaldsonville High, Duplessis Primary, Dutchtown High, Dutchtown Middle, Dutchtown Primary, East Ascension High, G.W. Carver Primary, Gonzales Middle, Lakeside Primary, Oak Grove Primary, St. Amant High, St. Amant Middle and St. Amant Primary schools.
Two of the students have been cleared by a physician to return to school, Songy said.
In a statement posted on the system?s Web site, Songy encouraged parents to report any confirmed cases of the flu to school administrators as soon as a diagnosis has been made.
He also asked that students with flu-like symptoms not attend school.
?The health and well-being of our students and employees is our highest priority,? Songy said.
No schools have been closed, Balfantz said.
?We are tracking it every day and will take all steps necessary,? Balfantz said.
