In the last two weeks, at least 78 Tulane students have been diagnosed with the flu. James Farrow, executive director of Tulane?s student health center, reported that this year there have been approximately eight to ten times more confirmed cases of the flu as there were last year.
?The kids coming down with the flu are almost exclusively those who did not receive the flu vaccine,? Farrow said. ?The flu vaccine was good this year.?
The Student Health Center, however, has run out of dosages.
?We received two shipments of the flu vaccine in January, as kids were getting back to campus, but we have already run out,? Farrow said. ?There is such a huge demand that even some commercial pharmacies giving the shot out for free have run out and have not been able to get more. We have a standing order for more vaccines, but the suppliers have not promised a date when we will receive another shipment.?
