The flu has been less of a threat so far this year.
State health officials say the beginning of this year?s flu season is the slowest they have seen in decades.
?It has been extraordinarily low,? said Dr. Frank Welch, head of Louisiana?s immunization program. ?We?ve had flu activity. It?s just been at a low level, and it seems to be staying low. Other than a small spike in December, it?s been holding steady.?
While that news is good, it is no guarantee of things to come.
Welch attributed the lack of cases to warm weather and the fact that this year?s flu strain is similar to last year?s, meaning people who were vaccinated last year or this year could be protected.
Still, it is best to get an annual vaccination. It is the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones, your co-workers and the many strangers you come into contact with each day.
The vaccinations are widely available. Drug stores and pharmacies offer them, and many proudly promote their availability.
