    INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana has reported its influenza-related death for the 2016-17 flu season.

    Because of privacy laws, no information about the patient or where they live in Indiana is being released.

    Flu activity is minimal in the state and the country at this point, so you're being encouraged to take this time to get a flu shot...

    The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) is urging residents to take precautions amid recent increases in flu-like illnesses in several areas of the state. Four Indiana residents have died of the flu since the influenza season began in October.

    "It?s always heartbreaking to learn that someone died of the flu and we are just now beginning to enter peak flu season,? Indiana State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams, M.D., M.P.H., said. "Getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent this serious illness so I hope any Hoosier who hasn?t received a vaccine yet will consider getting one.?

      The number of influenza-related deaths in Indiana has doubled a two-week period. According to the latest Weekly Influenza Report issued by the Indiana State Department of Health on Friday, there have been twenty influenza-associated deaths this season, up from thirteen the previous week and ten deaths recorded in the report before that. One death occurred in the 5-to-24 age group, and one in the 25-49 age group. Four deaths occurred in individuals between the ages of 50 and 64, and 14 deaths occurred among people 65 and older.
