CHICAGO SCHOOLS REOPEN AFTER FLU SCARE

Illinois confirms 225 cases of Swine Flu

The Associated Press | Posted: Wednesday, May 6, 2009

There are now only 20 cases the state is calling "probable," which means they haven't yet been confirmed by additional testing. The state began doing its own confirmation tests on Sunday, which meant quicker turnaround on results and large increases in confirmed cases.

Meanwhile, classes are back in session at a school on Chicago's North Side that was the first in Illinois to close because of swine flu.

Kilmer Elementary reopened this morning. It was closed for a week after a 12-year-old student fell ill.

Other schools in Illinois reopened today after swine flu closures. They include: Ridge Circle Elementary in Streamwood, Ridge Lawn Elementary in Chicago Ridge and Algonquin Middle School in Des Plaines.

U.S. health officials are no longer recommending swine flu closures. The virus has turned out to be milder than feared, and the government decided to change its advice.

Health officials say parents should still make sure to keep sick children with flu-like symptoms at home for seven days

A look at Illinois swine flu cases

Illinois health officials have updated the state's swine flu numbers. A case is "confirmed" when additional laboratory testing backs up initial test results. Until then, the case is called "probable."

The state began doing its own confirmation tests on Sunday, which means quicker turnaround on results and large increases in confirmed cases.

The tally, as time goes on, will show largely the most serious cases because doctors are following the state's recommendation to test only severely ill patients. The virus has turned out to be milder than initially feared, so many mild cases may not be counted.

    Counties reporting:

    Boone: 2 confirmed.
    Chicago: 9 probable, 93 confirmed.
Cook (suburban): 2 probable, 57 confirmed.
    DeKalb: 1 probable.
    DuPage: 1 probable, 26 confirmed.
    Kane: 1 probable, 20 confirmed.
    Kendall: 1 probable, 1 confirmed.
    Knox: 1 confirmed.
    Lake: 1 probable, 4 confirmed.
    McHenry: 2 confirmed.
    Sangamon: 1 probable.
    Will: 15 confirmed.
    Winnebago: 2 probable, 2 confirmed.
    Undetermined: 1 probable, 2 confirmed.
    Total: 20 probable, 225 confirmed.

The Cook County Jail has had its first case of the H1N1 flu virus, commonly known as swine flu, confirmed, according to CBS-Ch. 2.
An inmate, a 35-year-old Chicago man, tested positive for the virus on Wednesday. He was booked in the jail May 2 on a drug charge and held in Division 5, a medium-security area of the complex near 26th Street and California Avenue.

A tier of the jail has been put under quarantine.

As an Illinois resident trying to track cases for our hospital I appreciate this map SO much. I printed several screens for my daily report! Thanks Dr. Niman for this much needed tool.
