Eight-year-old girl's death was flu-related
BLOOMINGTON ? The influenza-related death of an 8-year-old McLean County girl is a sad reminder that flu continues to circulate in Central Illinois.
?Even though the numbers are decreasing and we no longer are in peak flu season, that doesn?t mean that flu season is over,? Kera Simon, of the McLean County Health Department, said Monday.
The 8-year-old girl died last week of influenza B, which is not a novel virus, Simon said. But, she added, ?There were other medical conditions that contributed to the death.? Simon did not release more information about the girl.
The death is the second flu-related fatality in McLean County this flu season. A 54-year-old woman died of flu-related causes in November.
Meanwhile, at least six patients with flu have been admitted to McLean County hospital intensive care units, Simon said.
