Despite lower numbers of flu cases statewide, younger and middle-aged people have been hit particularly hard by the return of the 2009 H1N1 swine flu virus this season.
The death of a 52-year-old Wallingford woman last week from complications caused by H1N1 is among the influenza deaths reported in the state, according to the Department of Public Health. As of Feb. 15, 12 people over age 45 have died in Connecticut, the department reports.
Last season, when H3N2 was the predominant circulating virus, people 18 to 64 percent accounted for 35 percent of U.S. hospitalizations. This year, that number jumped to 61 percent. While rates are still highest among people 65 and older, people 50 to 64 now have the second-highest hospitalization rate, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control.
