CAMP PENDLETON ---- Two Camp Pendleton Marines have been confirmed to have swine flu, base officials said Friday morning.

Neither of the two were hospitalized, and both are recovering from their illness in quarantine. No one else they have been in contact with has been quarantined, officials said.

The two represent the first cases of the H1N1 flu virus at Camp Pendleton. Earlier this week, a Marine at the Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms in San Bernardino County was confirmed with the virus. He was isolated, and 30 troops he was in contact with were quarantined.

Three confirmed cases of flu in US Marines: corps

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Tests show that a total of three US Marines have fallen ill with swine flu in California, the corps said on Friday.

Two new cases were reported Friday at Camp Pendleton base outside San Diego as the US military said it was closely monitoring the situation to protect the health of its troops, who often live in close quarters.

"Two service members at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton have been confirmed with H1N1 flu virus," said a statement from the base.

"The service members are isolated and are being treated as outpatients. Both individuals are recovering and no additional personnel have been quarantined," it said.

On Wednesday, the military reported the first confirmed case of the flu at another marine base in southern California, Twentynine Palms.

That marine's condition was improving and he was being kept isolated "until his symptoms are gone and the isolation period expires," said a statement from the base.

The Defense Department said it was focused on safeguarding the health of country's armed forces, including more than 170,000 troops deployed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Our priority is preserving the ability of our service members to carry out their responsibilities to be able to sustain our current military operations," spokesman Bryan Whitman told reporters.

"Our medical capability within the military is obviously at a heightened alert in looking for and detecting any further individuals who might contract this illness," he said.

The Pentagon has large reserves of anti-viral drugs on hand, both in the United States and overseas, that can be used if necessary, he said.

US health officials earlier said the number of infections from the virus had hit 118.

Mexico's government raised its confirmed toll to 15 dead and 328 people infected as it began a five-day shutdown to halt the flu's spread, while more countries confirmed cases on their soil.
