  • 9 flu related deaths reported in Cullman region

CULLMAN ? A strain of the H1N1 influenza virus has hit the Cullman area hard in recent weeks, with three flu-related deaths reported at Cullman Regional Medical Center and hundreds of patients testing positive for the flu.

H1N1 seems to be particularly affecting those between 20 to 50 years old, and the three victims who died last month were all under 55 years old, said Dr. G. Scott Warner, a pulmonologist at Chest Medicine of Cullman. The flu usually poses the greatest threat to the young and elderly.

Warner said he wasn?t sure why the flu was affecting those between 20 and 50 years old more significantly, but he speculated that the age group is ?less vigilant about getting their vaccinations and preventing the flu that older and younger populations.?

These types of base-less speculations, from a specialist who admittedly cannot professionally attribute a cause, are the very nature of why more citizens will die unnecessarily. The individuals that we appoint and trust with our lives are now blaming the victim instead of taking the reins to find a solution to these unnecessary deaths from a known pathogen that predictably sweeps through the population every single year. Doctors bury their failures . . . good for the doctor, bad for the citizen.

Not only is this specialist and medical school professor willing to comment on the active age group, but he tacitly suggests that an unknown vaccine status contributed to all of the deaths?

The very essence of audacity is to casually address a conclusion to a topic where one has no definable information. In this case, the topic is one of 3 deaths, probably neighbors, a matter of sensitivity and importance.

If the doctor does not serve the patient in a time of crisis, who does the doctor serve?

Cullman, Alabama has a population under 15,000 residents.

After 9 flu deaths in region, cases appear to be tapering off

CULLMAN ? After nine people in the area have died from the flu over the past two months, the number of new flu cases in the region appears to be tapering off.

The 2009 H1N1 influenza strain is being blamed for a large number of working-age patients ? between 18 to 50 years old ? suffering from flu symptoms and hospitalizations. In the past two months, Cullman Regional Medical Center reported three flu-related deaths, with all three victims under 55 years old. Decatur General Hospital reported four flu-related deaths earlier this month, and Lawrence County Coroner Scott Norwood reported two deaths ? one of which included a 25-year-old man? in his county.
