Influenza in Alabama
For the week ending January 7, the geographic spread of influenza-like illness (ILI) in Alabama was was regional. Regional spread indicates ILI was above Alabama's threshold for recognized significance (3.22%) in at least two, but fewer than six, of the state's Public Health Areas (PHAs),or there were reported outbreaks, with laboratory-confirmed influenza (within the last 3 weeks) in the same PHAs. The influenza strains identified in the last three weeks included influenza A (H3) and B/Yamagata.
To review the geographic spread of ILI in Alabama, please visit the Influenza Surveillance Map (this map works best with recent supported versions of Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 11, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera, and many mobile devices).
A graph displaying ILI data and positive influenza specimens submitted to the Bureau of Clinical Laboratories (BCL) is also available.

2016-2017 Influenza Season (10/02/2016 ? 9/30/2017)
Synopsis:
Influenza activity is increasing. Arizona reported Regional Activity for week 1.
Influenza activity highlights:
? 270 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza were reported in the past week, from thirteen counties. 1,125
cases have been reported this season, with laboratory-confirmed cases identified in fifteen counties.
? 1,022 (91%) reports this season are influenza A, 90 (8%) are influenza B, and 13 (1%) are of unknown type.
? 73 (84%) of 87 specimens tested positive for influenza at ASPHL last week: 71 influenza A (H3) viruses, 1
influenza B/Victoria virus, and 1 influenza B/Yamagata virus.
? Influenza-like illness activity at sentinel providers was above Arizona?s threshold in week 52.
? The cases included in this report represent a small proportion of the true number of cases of
influenza. Many people do not visit the doctor when ill and doctors should not be expected to
run tests on all patients exhibiting influenza-like symptoms.

Report Key Points:
For Week 52, Arkansas reported ?Regional? activity to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) for geographic Spread of Influenza, and ?Low? or 4/10 for ILI intensity.
Since October 2, 2016, over 700 positive influenza antigen tests have been reported to ADH by health care
providers. In week 51, 41 counties reported influenza cases; the majority of reports came from Washington,
Jefferson, Benton, Garland, Randolph, Greene, Pulaski, Craighead, Crittenden, and Poinsett.
Among flu antigen tests that can distinguish between Influenza A and B virus type, 75 percent were A, and
25 percent were B.
Ten positive flu tests confirmed by PCR last week came from private labs, eight of type A, one of type B,
and one of A Subtype H3N2. ADH lab did not test any samples last week.
More than 2 percent of patients visiting emergency rooms last week were there for ILI. Less than 3 percent
of outpatient visits were for ILI.
Due to scheduled holiday closings, this week?s report excludes school absenteeism data.
To date, four influenza-related deaths have been reported in Arkansas this flu season.

Statewide emergency department visits attributed to the ?fever/flu syndrome? are currently at a level of
6.7%, well above the level of 5% statewide that is generally considered the minimum threshold when there
are elevated influenza-associated ED visits (Figure 1).
The percentage of outpatient visits with influenza-like illness (ILI) has recently increased above 2%, well
above the level of 1% statewide that is generally considered the baseline when there are increased influenzaassociated
visits in the outpatient setting (Figure 2).
The percentage of unscheduled hospital admissions due to pneumonia has increased above 5%, exceeding
the level of 4% statewide; generally considered the baseline when there may be increased pneumonia
hospitalizations due to influenza (Figure 3).
A total of 270 hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza admitted between August 28, 2016

Week 1: January 1-7, 2017
State influenza and influenza-like illness (ILI) activity:
Influenza season is here. Florida reported regional activity to the Centers of Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) for the second consecutive week.
In week 1, influenza activity in Florida remained elevated overall, indicating the start of the
influenza season.
Statewide, the percent of emergency department (ED) and urgent care center (UCC) visits for
influenza-like illness (ILI) decreased slightly, however, the percent of ED and UCC visits for ILI
among adults ≥65 years old increased and was above peak levels observed in the 2014-13
and 2015-16 influenza seasons.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity in children <5 years old decreased and was similar to
levels observed in the 2015-16 season at this time.
For more information on RSV activity in Florida, see page 11.
In week 52, the preliminary estimated number of deaths due to pneumonia and influenza (P&I)
decreased and was below levels seen in previous seasons at this time.
One influenza-associated pediatric death was reported. The child had no known underlying
health conditions and no reported vaccination for the 2016-17 influenza season.
This is the first influenza-associated pediatric death reported so far this season. While
rare, Florida receives reports of influenza-associated pediatric deaths each season.
Annual vaccination remains the best way to protect children against influenza infection.
It is not too late to vaccinate children for the 2016-17 influenza season. If you have not
gotten vaccinated yet, you should get vaccinated now.
Ten counties reported moderate influenza activity, 51 counties reported mild influenza activity,
and six counties reported no influenza activity.
Five ILI or influenza outbreaks were reported: three outbreaks of influenza A and two
outbreaks of ILI were reported in facilities serving adults ≥65 years old. A total of 22 outbreaks
of influenza or ILI have been reported so far this season.
