OREGON CITY -- Former Clackamas County Sheriff Bill Brooks died Sunday, two days after being released from the hospital for treatment of pneumonia. He was 79.

The longtime Oregon City resident served as the county's top cop from 1983 to 1992, when he retired after 40 years in law enforcement. He oversaw the introduction of modern police technology and the growing number of women in law enforcement, said Ris Bradshaw, Brooks' chief deputy, who became sheriff after Brooks retired.

Brooks was appointed sheriff in August 1983 by the county board of commissioners to complete the remainder of a four-year term left vacant by the resignation of Paul McAllister. Brooks later won election to the post in 1984 and 1988.

His long law enforcement career began in 1951, when he joined the Multnomah County sheriff's office as a deputy. Brooks then moved on to become an officer in the West Linn Police Department and joined the Clackamas County sheriff's office in 1953.

He was active in a number of civic and professional organizations, including the Oregon State Sheriffs Association, which named him Oregon Sheriff of the Year in 1985.

Brooks leaves behind his wife, Liz, seven children, 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
