Texas health officials said Tuesday they have identified the first case of monkeypox in the state but noted the illness does not currently present a risk to the general public.

The case was identified in a Dallas County resident who recently traveled internationally, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. The department is working with Dallas County Health and Human Services and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the case.

Health officials said they have also identified a “few” people who may have been exposed to the virus in Dallas. Those people are monitoring themselves for symptoms of infection, officials said...

Texas Man With Monkeypox Escapes Hospital and Flees Mexico
By Robyn White On 6/9/22 at 3:41 AM EDT

A Texas man infected with monkeypox escaped from a hospital in Mexico and fled the country, health authorities have confirmed.

The 48-year-old man, originally from Texas, was being treated at a hospital in Puerto Vallarta, on Mexico's Pacific coast, Agence France-Presse reported. Medical staff were keeping the man in isolation while they awaited a monkeypox test result when he decided to flee...

...The man's symptoms upon arrival at the hospital included chills, a cough, lesions on his face and neck, and muscle pain, according to the state health department.

Once escaping the hospital, AFP reported that the man went to a hotel to meet his partner, before catching a June 4 flight out of Puerto Vallarta.

On June 6, the CDC confirmed to Mexican authorities that the man had returned to the U.S. A subsequent monkeypox test confirmed him to be positive for the virus.

While in Mexico, the man had gone to the Mantamar Beach Club for parties, while in the state of Jalisco, according to Al Arabiya News.

The man had arrived in Mexico on May 27. From May 12 to 16, he had been in Germany, Al Arabiya News reported. Before he had traveled he had been in his hometown in Texas...

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Public Health announced it is investigating a possible monkeypox case in Travis County. It is waiting for results from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to confirm the case.

The person being investigated did not have to go the hospital and is isolating at home, APH said in a release. The health department is contact tracing anyone who may have come in contact with the person.

“While the threat of monkeypox remains low, we recommend that all Travis County residents be aware and seek medical care if you believe you have symptoms of the virus,” said Dr. Desmar Walkes, Austin-Travis County health authority. “While our local healthcare providers are working with epidemiologists to monitor the virus, the community should continue the hygiene practices we know work such as handwashing and minimizing skin-to-skin contact, especially with those showing rashes or sores.” ...

Houston Health Department confirms second monkeypox case
                June 24, 2022

The Houston Health Department today announced a confirmed second monkeypox infection in a Houston resident with recent international travel.

There is no known connection between this and the previously reported resident.

The threat of monkeypox to Houston remains low. Monkeypox is rare and doesn’t spread easily between people without close, personal, skin-to-skin contact.

The department’s lab conducted orthopoxvirus testing and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided confirmatory testing results.

The resident developed symptoms after returning from travel and is experiencing a mild illness. The resident did not require hospitalization and is isolating at home. Privacy laws prohibit the department from disclosing personal information or further details...

Monkeypox cases increase in Texas, but risk to public remains low

AUSTIN — The Texas Department of State Health Services and local health departments said today they have identified at least 12 cases of monkeypox since the first one was reported in early June.

While the first cases involved international travel, three patients report that they did not travel in the three weeks before becoming sick, meaning they were exposed in Texas, officials said.

The number of confirmed cases has tripled in Texas, where last week the state had four confirmed cases.

“With the sharp increase in monkeypox cases worldwide, it’s not surprising to see the virus spread in Texas,” said Dr. Jennifer Shuford, chief state epidemiologist, in a statement. “We want people to know what the symptoms are, and if they have symptoms, to avoid the types of close contact with other people that can spread the disease....”

Dallas County Reports First Locally Transmitted Monkeypox Case
The infected person attended a festival over the Fourth of July weekend where there was a high risk of transmission
                        Published July 6, 2022 • Updated on July 6, 2022 at 6:52 pm

Dallas County is reporting its first locally transmitted case of the monkeypox virus.

Dallas County Health and Human Services said Wednesday that it was an out-of-state visitor who was in the area for the Daddyland Festival over the Fourth of July weekend.

The person went to a Dallas hospital with a rash and was diagnosed with monkeypox through laboratory testing at the health department.

The person attended festival events and private parties while infectious, the health department said. There is now concern that people who attended the Daddyland Festival could have been exposed and possibly infected with monkeypox, the health department said.

The festival included dance parties with live music, pool parties and nightclub events where there was a high risk of monkeypox transmission...

                          Jul 7, 2022 |

UPDATE: A day after notifying the public that an out-of-state visitor in Dallas for the Daddyland Festival circuit parties over the July 4th weekend, Dallas County Health and Human Services announced that another man, visiting from out of state June 22-25, has also been diagnosed with monkeypox. The individual told HHS officials that he had been to Club Dallas while he was in town and while he was infectious, and that he had multiple sexual encounters at the Club Dallas sauna during that time.

“Persons who visited Club Dallas during these dates are advised to monitor themselves for possible monkeypox signs and seek medical attention if they develop symptoms of monkeypox,” an HHS press release noted...
