One human infection with a novel influenza A virus was reported by the state of Ohio. The person was infected with an influenza A (H1N1) variant (H1N1v) virus and died from complications as a result of the infection. The patient worked at a livestock facility that housed swine but no direct contact with swine was reported in the week prior to illness onset. No ongoing human-to-human transmission has been identified.

Reported Infections with Variant Influenza Viruses in the United States since 2005

When people are infected with influenza A viruses that are known to be genetically similar to viruses circulating in swine, these viruses are called ?variant viruses? and denoted with a letter ?v?. The table below reflects the most current case counts for variant virus infections reported in the United States since 2005.
Most infections with variant viruses have occurred in children (persons 18 or younger) and most cases have reported direct or indirect exposure to swine prior to onset of illness. Limited transmission from close contact with an infected person has been observed in some investigations of human infections with variant viruses, but sustained human-to-human transmission has not been documented.

H3N2v

Beginning in August 2011, infection with an H3N2v virus was detected in a number of people across several U.S. states. More information about H3N2v is available at Influenza A (H3N2) Variant Virus Outbreaks.

Novel Influenza A Viruses

During the 2014?15 influenza season, three cases of human infection with novel influenza A viruses have been reported. One infection with an influenza A (H3N2) variant virus occurred during the week ending October 18, 2014 (week 42) in Wisconsin, and one infection with an influenza A (H1N1) variant (H1N1v) virus was reported to CDC during the week ending January 24, 2015 (week 3) from Minnesota. Both patients had illness onset in October 2014 and reported contact with swine in the week preceding illness. Both patients fully recovered, and no further cases were identified in contacts of either patient. The third case, a fatal infection with an H1N1v virus was reported from Ohio during the week ending April 2, 2015 (week 17). The patient worked at a livestock facility that housed swine, but no direct contact with swine in the week before illness onset was reported. The patient died from complications of the infection, and no ongoing human-to-human transmission was identified.
