  • CDC H3N2v Media Briefing Today at Noon

We received this through "unofficial" channels. For some unknown reason FT is no longer on the CDC/HHS Media list. We were on the list in previous years. Later today I am going to call them to ask that we are placed back on the media list.

#USA CDC #H3N2v Media Briefing Starting Now - Tom Skinner speaking....

Joseph Bresee, M.D., Influenza Division, CDC - beginning to speak #H3N2v

Announces new FluView data - 12 new cases #H3N2v announced today - data here: http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=190804 ?

Summary - recent #H3N2v 16 cases reported contact with swine - all confirmed in CDC lab - 3 2011 cases may have been H2H

15 of 16 recent #H3N2v cases had contact with swine at fairs...need to watch contact with swine - data here: http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=190806 ?

Clinical trials for #H3N2v vaccine will be held this year...expect to identify more cases as time progresses - some cases could be severe..

Lisa Ferguson, D.V.M., National Animal Health Policy Programs, U.S. Department of Agriculture answering questions...#H3N2v

Pigs show respiratory symptoms - like people - when sick with #H3N2v...runny nose..etc.

Bresee: #H3N2v symptoms in people like seasonal flu - impossible to tell the difference..need to test for it if suspected

Bresee: Seasonal vaccine H3N2 will not protect against #H3N2v virus - it is human vs. a swine based flu -more clusters in H3N2v now & larger

Bresee: No evidence of efficient human #H3N2v tranmission as yet.

Bresee: #H3N2v has the M gene from H1N1pdm09 which may make it more transmissible among humans than other swine type flu.Monitoring to see..

Ferguson: Tracking evolution of #H2N3V - variable..hard to predict Bresee: Tracking in humans..genetic changes not predictable w/ certainty

Bresee: Last 16 #H3N2v cases not hospitalized, all infections self resolved

Bresee:May b many undiagnosed #H3N2v as seasonal flu.Would like people who suspect this illness 2 visit doctor so have better idea of spread

Bresee: No known epidemiological link between the human case in Hawaii and the human cases in Indiana and Ohio.

Ferguson: Have Increased surveillance of swine due to #H3N2v b/c of M gene

Guiseppe posted these on twitter (in blue):

@FluTrackers No suggestion on the inability to control swineflu in animals? Is this a Chinese Syndrome in the US?

It seems the US is simply monitoring the H3N2v in pigs. I did not hear about any proactive culling or stamping out. Personally, I think it is too late for that. I think the management will be in humans.

@FluTrackers However, it could be a boost for those with cross- protective Abs (children >10, adult >30)

I think cross-protection in vaccines (H3N2 in the seasonal trivalent) can never be ruled out. We have seen some evidence of this in a few H5N1 studies. However the protection rate might be very, very low if it exists at all. A "good" vaccine match is 70%, so how effective is say..1%?

The presence of cross reactive antibodies in adult born before 1990 is somewhat less robust than against current seasonal H3N2 but it is clearly demostrable in subjects who were infected by current H3N2v ancestor during 1990 - 1998 seasonal outbreaks. H3 surface protein of the swine flu is of human origin, as well as other internal genes.
