Outbreaks There are no new outbreaks in this report
    Epidemiology
Source of the outbreak(s) or origin of infection
    • Contact with wild species
Epidemiological comments Many US States are no longer under any restriction and are free to move live poultry and poultry products domestically and internationally. The HPAI H5N2 events are final, closed, and resolved for the following States: Arkansas; California; Idaho; Indiana, Kansas; Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin. The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in conjunction with State Departments of Agriculture and Wildlife, maintain a comprehensive epidemiological investigation and enhanced surveillance (including wild bird surveillance of hunter harvested birds) in response to the HPAI H5N8 and H5N2 wild bird related events. In 2014 a novel avian influenza virus of Eurasian origin (EA-H5N8 clade 2.3.4.4) spread rapidly along wild bird migratory pathways. Introduction of this EA-H5N8 virus into the Pacific Flyway sometime during 2014 allowed mixing with North American (AM) lineage viruses and generated new combinations with genes from both EA and AM origin (or ?reassortant? viruses) such as this EA/AM H5N2-reassortant detected in the United States. In addition, overlap of the Pacific, Central, and Mississippi flyways resulted in movement of the virus to the central part of the country. The EA-H5 clade 2.3.4.4 viruses are highly pathogenic for poultry. The last positive detection of HPAI H5N2 was made on June 18, 2015. HPAI H5N2 events are now final, closed, and resolved in the following states: Arkansas; California; Idaho; Indiana, Kansas; Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin. In addition to having no further HPAI events, these States (listed above) where controls have been released, have met the following: ? Required surveillance in the state and control areas has been completed with negative results for HPAI. As a precaution, additional enhanced surveillance may continue in the state and area. ? Depopulation of infected premises has been completed and appropriate disposal was completed. ? Cleaning and disinfection of the infected premises has been completed (including, but not limited to, outside areas, equipment, trucks, and other fomites). ? No recent HPAI detections through wild bird surveillance have been made. States that have not been released are making good progress and control areas in those states are being removed as they meet the time elements and other measures for release.
