GIBSON CO., Tenn. (WMC) - The Tennessee Department of Agriculture says avian influenza, or bird flu, has caused a sudden spike in chicken deaths at a commercial farm in Gibson County.
State officials are worried that a highly-pathogenic strain is behind the illnesses. Veterinarians will know more once lab testing is complete.
“Although we are awaiting final confirmation, we are confident the illness affecting this flock is HPAI (highly-pathogenic avian influenza),” said Dr. Samantha Beaty with Breathitt Veterinary Center Laboratory, where testing is underway.
“HPAI continues to circulate in our environment, particularly in the wild bird population,” she continued. “As always, we strongly encourage people who own birds to practice strong biosecurity to protect their flock.”
