SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Federal inspectors have confirmed the presence of bird flu in a commercial mixed species flock in southeastern South Dakota.

The Agriculture Department says samples from the flock in Charles Mix County, which borders Nebraska, were tested at a national laboratory at South Dakota State University. The property was quarantined and the birds will be killed to prevent the spread of the disease...

State officials say 85,000 birds at two South Dakota facilities have been euthanized as the state tackles its first avian flu outbreak since 2015. Two other sites are under investigation.

"I think the response is going well and the industry has done a great job of stepping up and trying to prevent it," said Dr. Mendel Miller, the assistant state veterinarian.

"They're doing everything they can, but you know, there's just some things that are out of their control, and we just have to deal with it when it happens," he added.

The outbreaks were detected in turkeys at two concentrated animal feeding operations in Charles Mix County, in the southeast part of the state. But other kinds of poultry in close contact with the turkeys were euthanized as well.

Miller said the South Dakota Veterinary Medical Exam Board does not share the names of facilities with outbreaks.

Two other sites are under investigation and Miller said those counties will be identified if the tests come back positive...

Three new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) have been confirmed in commercial turkey flocks in three South Dakota counties, while another case has been confirmed in a commercial pullet flock in Maryland.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), HPAI was confirmed in the South Dakota Counties of Hutchinson, Kingsbury and Hanson, affecting 49,000, 39,000 and 20,233 turkeys, respectively.

These three cases follow two earlier HPAI cases in commercial poultry operations in South Dakota in 2022. ..

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - According to the USDA, avian influenza has now been confirmed in 12 locations in seven South Dakota counties, including Kingsbury.

Officials report it has impacted more than 600,000 birds in commercial flocks of chickens and turkeys in the state. In Kingsbury County, that included a commercial flock of 124,000 layers and a turkey flock of 39,000 birds.

Authorities also said it has been detected in Beadle, Charles Mix, Edmunds, Jerauld, Hanson, and Hutchinson Counties. Flocks, where the bird flu has been confirmed, are destroyed and the property is quarantined...
