    Animal health priority No. 1

    (snipped)

LaBarbera said there is a quarantine at a poultry farm in Lititz. He said tests were taken last week of poultry sold at a livestock sale that tested positive for a strain of avian influenza, and the birds were tracked back to the farm in Lititz.

LaBarbera said the strain of influenza found in Lititz is not a very contagious version of the disease, but the Bureau of Animal Health is allowing no movement of birds from the farm for two weeks. He said it can take two weeks for the birds to build antibodies to the disease, and if they are still sick after that time more actions are taken.

LaBarbera said his bureau reviews diseases and makes changes to the regulations for the Farm Show each year.

Past years of the Farm Show have been indirectly affected by disease outbreaks, including the first outbreak of avian influenza that came to Lancaster County in the 1983-84 winter season. All birds were banned from the show to prevent any spreading of influenza.
