Bird Flu Detected In Yamhill County
    Nov 6, 2022

On November 3, the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) confirmed the state’s first detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a non-commercial flock in Yamhill County. The affected flock included approximately 100 birds, including chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, and emu.

Because the owners sold their eggs to the public the USDA classifies the birds as a poultry flock rather than a backyard flock, meaning federal and international disease control protocols require the state veterinarian to issue a regional quarantine. The purpose of the quarantine is to prevent the movement of poultry and poultry products from within the affected area giving state and federal officials time to conduct surveillance to ensure no additional cases of HPAI exist. The quarantine also applies to importing all birds from states where a state or federal quarantine is in place. An interactive map of the quarantine area is available at oda.fyi/map...

Bird flu infects two more flocks in Deschutes County
The outbreaks coincide with another deadly virus that has killed a few pet rabbits
    By: Lynne Terry - August 2, 2022 3:33 pm

State agricultural officials have identified two more backyard bird flocks that are infected with bird flu.

The Agricultural Department said Tuesday that they’re both in Deschutes County, marking the fifth and sixth outbreaks there. They coincide with the death of nine pet rabbits killed by a virus that only affects rabbits and hares but is spread by other creatures.

State agricultural officials said Oregon has had 11 instances of bird flu in noncommercial backyard flocks this year: six in Deschutes County, two in Linn County and one each in Polk, Lane and Coos County. The latter was announced last week.

In all cases, agriculture officials have culled the flocks to prevent the spread of the deadly virus. They have euthanized 1,330 birds, including about 150 ducks, chickens and pea fowl in the latest two cases.

Since the first outbreaks in Deschutes County, it has been under a quarantine. ..

Bird flu infects first flock in Coos County
    By: Lynne Terry - July 29, 2022 9:04 pm

Bird flu has spread in Oregon to Coos County where an infected flock was discovered last week.

The state Department of Agriculture said the flock of 25 chicken and ducks was euthanized to prevent the spread of the deadly disease. To date, the virus has infected nine backyard flocks, including four in Deschutes County, two in Linn County and one each in Polk and Lane counties. A backyard flock in Idaho near the Oregon border also contracted the disease.

That’s led to quarantines and the euthanization of more than 1,000 birds. Agriculture officials did not enact a quarantine in Coos County because the owner did not sell the eggs, state officials said...

    Published July 22, 2022 11:16 AM

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- A fourth case of the bird flu has been confirmed in the Bend area. The case in the Bend area will expand the current quarantine area by another seven miles. It now includes half of Redmond, including the Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center. The Deschutes County fair begins on August 3rd and the expanded quarantine will change what type of birds are allowed.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture's State Veterinarian, Dr. Ryan Scholz, and the Deschutes County 4-H are working together to come up with a plan to let people bring in and sell market birds. Breeding birds will not be allowed at the fair this year...

State lab detects fourth case of bird flu in backyard flock
    By: Lynne Terry - July 8, 2022 4:05 pm

State officials say that bird flu remains a threat in Oregon, especially to backyard flocks, with confirmation of a fourth infected flock this week.

The state veterinary lab confirmed Wednesday that the virus had sickened a backyard flock in Linn County, the state Agriculture Department said in a release. That’s the second Linn County flock infected and the fourth bird flu case in Oregon this year. The two other instances were in Lane and Polk counties.

All of the cases involved backyard flocks, and state and federal officials have euthanized the birds to prevent further spread. No commercial flocks, which are often raised in enclosed barns, have been infected, the department said...

Bird flu detected in Oregon's Polk County
    By GEORGE PLAVEN Capital Press
    Jun 13, 2022 Updated 3 hrs ago

SALEM — Highly pathogenic avian influenza continues to spread across Oregon, with state agriculture officials confirming the disease was recently detected in a backyard flock of ducks and geese in Polk County.

According to the Oregon Department of Agriculture, the flock's owner initially notified a private veterinarian following the sudden death of at least one bird. Other birds in the flock were also displaying symptoms consistent with bird flu.

The veterinarian sent a sample of the dead bird to Oregon State University, where a preliminary test came back positive for the disease. The result was confirmed by the USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratory on June 9.

Elsewhere in Oregon, outbreaks of bird flu have been reported May 6 in Linn County and May 17 in Lane County, both in backyard poultry flocks...
