Several vultures in Hillsborough tested positive for avian influenza, prompting local officials to issue a warning to residents.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Fish and Wildlife confirmed the infections after finding the birds in a ravine near Wildflower Lane. The Hillsborough Health Department urged residents to avoid direct contact with wild birds, keep pets away from them and report unusual die-offs to the state hotline at 1-877-WARNDEP.

New Jersey has tracked isolated cases of avian flu in recent years, mostly among waterfowl and scavenger species. Wildlife experts monitor the spread closely because the virus can threaten both agriculture and native bird populations.
Officials reminded residents not to feed wild birds or leave food scraps outside that attract them. Pet owners should keep dogs and cats from scavenging in wooded areas where sick birds may gather.

Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) has been detected at MCR for the second straight winter. Several deceased snow geese have been recovered from the shoreline at MCR this past weekend 12/29/25 At this time, based on State Guidance, MCR is not closing as the snow geese have not started to use MCR as a permanent roosting spot yet. They have been sporadic in visiting MCR so far this season with only small groups of them occasionally stopping in. HOWEVER, depending on the circumstances, public closure to the property may occur at any time, so please check our website for updates – DO NOT USE any other source for MCR information other than our website https://merrillcreek.com/
For now, while we are still open, all visitors must take the following precautions for health and safety reasons:
Should you choose to visit MCR: Avoid contact with dead or sick birds and bird feces and report sightings to staff. Stay away from the shoreline.
Please note that the highly pathogenic Avian Influenza may exist on site in/on bird remains, feces and/or feathers so DO NOT Handle and stay away from the shoreline.
If dead or sick birds are seen at MCR, DO NOT Handle; please call 908-454-3339 to report where you are seeing them.
Decontaminate footwear and gear & sanitize hands. Please arrive at MCR prepared to decontaminate your footwear and gear after hiking (i.e. Lysol or spray hand sanitizer) to prevent the contamination, contraction, and spread of the H5N1 virus.
If you come in contact with water at the property, please avoid touching eyes, nose, mouth until hands have been cleaned/sanitized (i.e. soap and water or hand sanitizer).
To prevent the spread of the highly pathogenic Avian Influenza visitors MUST pay attention and follow warnings on posted signs throughout MCR. DO NOT go off trail or near the shoreline.

VERY IMPORTANT for HIKERS:
MCR performs maintenance duties on both trails and dam/dike structures routinely and we do our best to inform the public prior to scheduled work. However, there are times when prior notification is not possible because of emergency and/or weather-related situations (downed trees, washouts, etc). In cases like these, MCR places large orange Trail Closure signs at areas that are being worked on. If you encounter a Trail Closure sign while on a trail DO NOT enter that area or walk past the closure signs as you will put yourself and others working in the area at risk. Entering work areas that have been posted with warning signage is grounds for immediate removal from the property and permanent banning from the property. DO NOT ASSUME work is complete until all trail closure signs are removed from an area. Please take Trail Closure signs seriously – it really does mean do not enter. It is for your safety and the safety of others.

PLEASE NOTE: Park Rangers have observed dead and infirm Canada Geese in some of our parks this week. Avian flu is suspected. We are working with State wildlife biologists to assess the extent of the outbreak. Visitors are urged not to touch dead or sick birds.

The Somerset County Park Commission is aware of recent reports of deceased wild birds observed in the state and county. Two of the locations with sightings are Park Commission properties, including the Environmental Education Center and Duke Island Park. We are monitoring the situation in coordination with our State and Federal partners.
Members of the public are advised not to handle, touch, or attempt to assist sick or deceased birds.
Please keep pets leashed and away from areas where deceased or sick birds have been observed.
For your safety, visitors should not walk on any ice or frozen bodies of water at Park Commission properties.

An active outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) throughout the State of New Jersey is being monitored by NJDEP Fish & Wildlife and federal partners. Since the beginning of the U.S. outbreak in January 2022, avian influenza has impacted wild birds in every state.
Typical signs of HPAI include diarrhea, discharge from the nose, coughing, sneezing, and incoordination, but some birds may show no signs before death.
While HPAI can infect humans, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declared that the ongoing HPAI outbreak is primarily an animal health issue that poses low risk to the health of the general public.
