Sampling shows no sign of bird flu in Nevada

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- The Nevada Department of Wildlife says testing on nearly 2,500 birds throughout Nevada has shown no sign of avian influenza in the state.

It was part of a project that detected no cases of the disease anywhere in the Pacific flyway.

State and federal agencies are running these tests as a pre-emptive measure, although bird flu has not been detected in wild birds or domestic poultry in North America.

The state wildlife department, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services captured live birds over the summer and sampled ducks, geese and swans taken by hunters from October through January.
