USDA Confirms Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Montana

WASHINGTON, April 8, 2022 – The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in two flocks in Montana – a non-commercial, backyard flock (poultry) in Cascade County, and a non-commercial, backyard flock (non-poultry) in Judith Basin County.

Samples from the flocks were tested at the Montana Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, part of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network, and confirmed at the APHIS National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa...

HELENA, Mont. — Montana now has eight flocks confirmed that are infect with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). This is part of a wave in the United States linked to the seasonal migrations of wild birds.

The following was sent out by Montana Department of Livestock:

On Wednesday, April 27, the Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL) received confirmation of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in a Pondera County flock. Montana now has eight flocks confirmed infected as part of a wave of HPAI infections in the United States linked to the seasonal migrations of wild birds. HPAI has also been detected in Judith Basin, Cascade, Toole, Glacier, Missoula, Fergus, and Gallatin Counties...

State livestock officials announced this week they have confirmed cases of the avian flu in Flathead County. The highly contagious virus was found in a backyard poultry flock.

The Montana Department of Livestock confirmed the Flathead area flock of chickens has highly pathogenic avian influenza. This is the tenth flock in Montana with a confirmed case. Avian flu strikes Flathead Valley

According to a press release from the Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL), Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in a Flathead County backyard poultry flock consisting of seven animals Monday, July 24.

First detected in domestic birds in Indiana on Feb. 8 of this year, the new avian influenza strain had been detected in wild birds in Newfoundland and Labrador in eastern Canada in December 2021. First being detected in the eastern United States in January 2022, as of Friday morning, the virus had been found in domestic bird operations in 38 states, infecting 398 flocks and affecting more than more than 41 million birds.

This is the 10th HPAI affected Montana flock linked to a 2022 wave of HPAI infections in the United States traced to seasonal migrations of wild birds and the first confirmed case in the state since infected flocks were found in Gallatin, Pondera and Fergus counties April 29.

"With over two months since our last case of HPAI in the state, we had hoped that avian influenza was behind us," Montana State Veterinarian Marty Zaluski said. "Unfortunately, the risk seems to persist, and poultry owners should continue to practice enhanced biosecurity measures. It looks like this strain of avian influenza this year is a bit more sticky than the last outbreak we had in 2015."...

State livestock officials have confirmed detections of bird flu in a backyard poultry flock in Flathead County, providing the latest evidence that this year’s wave of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) continues to march across the United States.

On July 24, the Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL) announced a positive detection of HPAI at a Flathead County residence, marking the 10th HPAI affected Montana flock linked to this year’s wave of U.S. infections, which have been traced to seasonal migrations of wild birds. Nationally, nearly 400 poultry flocks have been diagnosed with HPAI this year.

“With over two months since our last case of HPAI in the state, we had hoped that avian influenza was behind us,” Marty Zaluski, Montana state veterinarian, said in a prepared statement. “Unfortunately, the risk seems to persist, and poultry owners should continue to practice enhanced biosecurity measures.” ...
