KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Investigators with the United States Department of Agriculture are working with poultry producers in Missouri after a case of highly pathogenic avian flu was discovered in a chicken flock in Webster County east of Springfield, Missouri.

According to a release Wednesday from the Missouri Department of Agriculture, authorities noticed a sudden increase in mortality in the flock and sent samples from the block to a lab in Iowa.

After results came back positive for avian flu, authorities quarantined the premises and destroyed the remaining birds. In total, about 9,000 laying hens were impacted...

Avian influenza impacts 2 commercial poultry operations in Missouri in November – the latest cases since May

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers the risk to the general public from avian flu infections in wild birds, backyard flocks and commercial poultry to be low, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

The illness, which infects poultry and waterfowl, has seen a resurgence throughout the United States in the past year and a half. According to the latest data by the U.S Department of Agriculture, between March, 2022 and November 13, 2023, 61.60 million birds were infected with avian influenza nationwide.

The first case in Missouri was confirmed on March 3, 2022. According to the Missouri Department of Agriculture, the latest cases were detected in two commercial flocks – one in Benton County on November 6 and one in Jasper County on November 14...

HPAI events are now closed and control areas have been released in the following States: Alaska, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. These States have not had any recent HPAI events and have demonstrated: • Required surveillance in the State and control areas has been completed with negative results for HPAI. As a precaution, additional enhanced surveillance may continue in the State and area. • Depopulation of infected premises has been completed and appropriate disposal was implemented or completed. • Cleaning and disinfection of the infected premises has been completed (including, but not limited to, outside areas of premises, equipment, trucks, and other fomites). Note (26/10/2022): After reassessment by field investigators, outbreak OB_107904 has been designated as non-poultry premises and subsequently removed from this event.
