WILLMAR — Minnesota continues to add to its list of avian flu infection sites — with 66 confirmed sites — while the number of birds affected has not changed drastically since last week.

Three of the four new sites announced by the Minnesota Board of Animal Health since last week were small backyard producers, including two in Chisago County. Flocks of 55 and 30 unspecified poultry were confirmed April 30, the first sites in that county.

Morrison County has its 12th infection site, this one a backyard producer of 40 birds confirmed April 30.

Stearns County now has a ninth site of infection, a commercial turkey flock of 10,000 breeder hens confirmed infected April 29.

The Board of Animal Health's tally of confirmed diagnoses of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza as of Tuesday afternoon stands at 2,728,297...

(KNSI) — The Minnesota Board of Animal Health says there are now 68 sites in Minnesota reporting highly pathogenic avian influenza infections.

The board says 2.72 million birds have been affected across 22 counties.

There are 35 sites across Benton, Kandiyohi, Meeker, Morrison, and Stearns Counties affecting backyard flocks and commercial meat, breeder, and egg operations. When a bird flu infection has been identified, the flock is depopulated to prevent sick animals from entering the food supply. There is a low risk of humans contracting avian influenza. Experts say poultry and poultry products are safe to consume...

WILLMAR — Minnesota is approaching 2.9 million birds impacted by avian flu, with four additional sites of confirmed infection identified since last week.

Three of the four new sites announced by the Minnesota Board of Animal Health since last week were small backyard poultry producers and the fourth was a Lyon County flock of 118,900 commercial meat turkeys, the first site in that county with a confirmed diagnosis, on May 3.

The backyard producers reported since last week were in Chisago County, 30 birds, confirmed May 3; Carver County, also 30 birds, confirmed May 4; and 10 birds in Anoka County, confirmed May 6...

There are 75 sites of confirmed H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza infection in Minnesota as of Tuesday, May 17, according to the Minnesota Board of Animal Health.

WILLMAR — Five more sites of avian flu infection have been identified in Minnesota since this time last week, all classified as backyard producers.

Minnesota remains just under 2.9 million birds impacted by avian flu, changed little since the May 10 report by the Minnesota Board of Animal Health.

The tally of confirmed diagnoses of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza as of May 17 stands at 2,895,350.

According to the daily reports shared by the Board of Animal Health, Crow Wing County has its first infection site, a flock of 145 birds confirmed as diagnosed May 10. Reports of backyard producers do not specify the type of poultry.

Todd County has its fifth location of infection, a flock of 52 birds also confirmed May 10.

Chisago County has its fourth and fifth sites this week, 155 birds confirmed May 11 and 37 birds confirmed May 12.

The first site in Grant County is 309 birds confirmed May 12...

Deadly bird flu returns to Midwest earlier than expected

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Bird flu has returned to the Midwest earlier than authorities expected after a lull of several months, with the highly pathogenic disease being detected in a commercial turkey flock in western Minnesota, officials said Wednesday.

The disease was detected after a farm in Meeker County reported an increase in mortality last weekend, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health said. Tests confirmed the disease Tuesday evening. The flock was euthanized to stop the spread.

It was the first detection of avian influenza in Minnesota since May 31, when a backyard flock was struck in Becker County, and the first in the Midwest since a backyard flock in Indiana on June 9. However, there have been several detections in western states in July and August, including California, Washington, Oregon, Utah, plus a few in some eastern states.

“While the timing of this detection is a bit sooner than we anticipated, we have been preparing for a resurgence of the avian influenza we dealt with this spring,” said Dr. Shauna Voss, the board’s senior veterinarian. “HPAI is here and biosecurity is the first line of defense to protect your birds.”..

(KNSI) — Instances of highly pathogenic avian influenza are popping up again around Minnesota.

The state Board of Animal Health says two new cases were reported in Stearns County in September. Both were reported in commercial turkey meat bird flocks. This month, other cases have been reported in commercial turkey meat bird flocks in several counties, including Meeker and Morrison Counties.

Since the first reports of H5N1 came in back in March, 32 Minnesota counties have reported cases affecting 72 commercial flocks and 25 backyard flocks, bringing the number of affected birds in the state to more than 3.6 million.

In central Minnesota, Benton County has had two reported cases, Kandiyohi County has had nine, Meeker County has had eight, Morrison County has had 13, and Stearns County has reported 11 cases.

The Board says any unexplained illness or increase in mortality, decreased egg production, quiet or depressed birds, respiratory or neurologic (twisted necks or quiet) signs of disease should be investigated. Producers and flock tenders should call their veterinarian to describe the symptoms in the flock so the next steps can be taken. WILLMAR — More than 650,000 birds over 18 sites have been depopulated in Minnesota due to an early autumn surge in highly pathogenic avian influenza.

The first two cases of avian flu since May 31 were reported Aug. 30 in Meeker County, affecting commercial turkey flocks of 52,106 birds and 126,407 birds, according to statistics on the Minnesota Board of Animal Health's website — bah.state.mn.us/hpai/

Since that time, an additional 16 sites have been identified, quarantined and depopulated, affecting 523,853 birds from both commercial and backyard operations.

The identified sites include commercial operations in Becker, Brown, Meeker, Morrison, Otter Tail, Roseau and Stearns counties, and backyard flocks in Goodhue, Freeborn, Isanti, Hennepin and Todd counties.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly 6 million birds from 59 flocks were affected between Sept. 1 and 29. While there was a significant decrease in reported avian flu cases from June (2.17 million) to July (50,000), the end of August signaled the start of a rapid increase, with a total of just over 600,000 cases reported...

Avian flu strikes another Minnesota turkey flock
Otter Tail County has its seventh confirmed case in 2022

The latest case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) involved another commercial meat turkey flock in Minnesota.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced on its website that the case was in Otter Tail County, and involved 30,000 birds.

This marks the seventh case of HPAI in Otter Tail County. Of the previous six cases, five involved commercial meat turkeys, while the other was a flock of turkey breeder hens. This is the county’s first confirmed case since September 19...
