  • Attention Waterfowl Hunters: Amid bird flu outbreak, Michigan DNR asks for waterfowl hunters' help 12/1/25

    December 1, 2025

    -snip-
    Tips for bird flu prevention

Among the further precautions DNR recommends for waterfowl hunters:
    • Do not harvest or handle wild birds that are obviously sick or found dead.
    • Process wild birds in the field. Remains from processed birds should be buried on-site or double-bagged and disposed of with household trash.
    • Wear rubber or disposable gloves while handling and cleaning wild birds, and wash hands with soap and water or alcohol-based hand cleanser, even if hands are not visibly soiled.
    • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth when handling wild birds.
    • Do not eat, drink or smoke when handling or cleaning wild birds.
    • Thoroughly clean and disinfect all knives, equipment and surfaces that come into contact with wild birds.

Anyone coming into contact with obviously sick or dead wild birds, or surfaces contaminated by them, should monitor for these symptoms for 10 days from the last exposure:
    • Fever with temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, often accompanied by chills.
    • Sore throat.
    • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.
    • Eye tearing, redness or irritation.
    • Runny or stuffy nose.
    • Muscle or body aches.

Hunters are also encouraged to keep domestic animals away from wild birds, alive or dead; and away from the hunter's clothes or boots that may have been exposed to the birds. Hunters should shower and change clothes after hunting and before tending to domestic animals....more

Some 130 wild birds have tested positive for bird flu in Michigan, with most detections in Canada geese, bald eagles and red-tailed hawks.
