Educational materials, such as videos, activities, posters, and brochures and infornmation about influenza

A pandemic is an outbreak of illness that affects the entire world. Influenza (flu) pandemics are rare but recurring events; they have typically occurred every 10-50 years throughout recorded history. During the 1918 flu pandemic, approximately 40 million people died worldwide, making it the most devastating infectious disease outbreak ever recorded. Because they bring an abrupt surge in illness and deaths, pandemics frequently overwhelm hospitals and health clinics, and can cause businesses to close and severe disruptions in the economy.

The avian influenza (bird flu) that is circulating in Asia and Europe is the strain with the most pandemic potential, but another type of virus could ultimately be responsible. Regardless of which strain becomes a pandemic, we will all feel its impact. Whether the next pandemic is months or years away, it?s important to take this window of opportunity to prepare.

When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for it then costs nothing to be a patriot."- Mark TwainReason obeys itself; and ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it. -Thomas Paine
