    Historic flu epidemic talk

    SPRINGVALE (Oct 13, 2006):
The potent H5N1 ?bird flu? virus has been in the news lately as scientists around the world work to prevent a lethal pandemic.

As part of their research, they have turned to a similar outbreak, the Great Influenza or ?Spanish Flu? epidemic of 1918. That lethal event killed more people in 20 weeks than AIDS has taken in 20 years. It was the greatest health crisis ever to confront the United States and the people of Sanford.

Learn how it began, where it spread, and how it affected our community. How did schools, businesses and townspeople react? How many people died? And most importantly, what can we expect if we have another pandemic?

On Thursday, Oct. 19 at the Sanford-Springvale Historical Museum (formerly the Springvale Town Hall, Main Street, Springvale) the Sanford-Springvale Historical Society will sponsor a talk on the 1918 flu epidemic by Paul Auger, a history teacher at Sanford High School and member of the historical society. The talk will begin at 7 p.m.

All meetings and programs of the society are open to the public, and everyone is welcome. For more information or questions, call 490-6840.
