Sedgwick County Zoo announces temporary closures after local case of bird flu
Dec. 30, 2024 at 4:52 PM EST|Updated: 1 hour ago
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Sedgwick County Zoo has activated its Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) action plan after a case of bird flu was positively identified in the county.
The Kansas Department of Agriculture said the Sedgwick County case was found in a non-poultry flock, which refers to a group of birds that are not intended for sale nor their products.
While this strain doesn’t pose a high risk to human health, the zoo said it puts many animals at risk. In response, the zoo is temporarily closing the Tropics building and discontinuing Penguin Encounters.
The zoo said its animal care staff is committed to providing the best care for the birds while adhering to strict safety protocols.
Although bird flu has been detected nationwide, the KDA said there have been no cases in Kansas poultry flocks since spring 2024. The disease is primarily spread through the migration of wild birds, which creates a risk for domestic birds in Kansas.
