<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td class="moduleTitle" height="21" nowrap="nowrap" width="100%">Avian and Pandemic Flu</td><td class="moduleTitleMiddle" valign="middle"></td></tr></tbody></table> We hear daily news reports about an avian influenza called H5N1, commonly referred to as the 'bird flu.' This is a flu virus that infects birds, but can infect people, too. This virus began in southeast Asia, but is now spreading throughout <st1:place>Europe</st1:place> and <st1:place>Africa</st1:place>. It is only a matter of time before the virus spreads to <st1:place>North America</st1:place>.
Fewer than 200 people worldwide have become sick with the bird flu, and most of these were people who directly handled poultry. But for those infected, this strain appears to be especially dangerous, with a high death rate among people who became ill.
There is concern that this strain of bird flu could cause a pandemic ? a very dangerous, worldwide outbreak of illness. That will only happen if the flu virus changes or mutates so people can catch it easily from each other ? not just from birds. That hasn?t happened yet ? and it may never happen. But health officials believe we should prepare for the possibility, for eventually the world will likely experience a worldwide flu pandemic.
On this page you will find helpful material and links to information about the bird flu and how you can prepare and protect yourself from a possible pandemic. If you would like to review the Idaho Pandemic Response Plan, click here.
