  • Monumental testing program finds no evidence of deadly bird flu in Florida

Tallahassee, Florida - Over the past five years, Florida has mounted one of the most aggressive biosecurity efforts ever undertaken by the state and the results are reassuring.

Florida has tested more than 100,000 birds for avian influenza since 2005 and not a single case has turned up positive.

Fears about bird flu exploded five years ago when a deadly virus started spreading rapidly from Asia into the Middle East, Europe and Africa.

The virus was hard to battle once a person was infected. It killed 60 percent of those who got sick.

Florida ramped up a monumental effort under former Gov. Jeb Bush to prepare for a possible bird flu pandemic. It included extensive bird testing.

Jennifer Jennings-Glover of Florida's Division of Animal Industry helped lead that program. She says the results should reassure all Floridians.
