USDA Confirms Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Colorado

WASHINGTON, April 9, 2022 – The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a non-commercial backyard flock (poultry) in Pitkin County, Colorado.

Samples from the flock were tested at the Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, part of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network, and confirmed at the APHIS National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa...

COLORADO, USA — Avian flu was confirmed this week in poultry operations in Montrose and La Plata counties, leading to the euthanasia of thousands of birds, according to the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

The Montrose County case was confirmed Wednesday in a commercial poultry operation. The 60,000 bird flock is being euthanized to control the spread of the virus, the agriculture department said.

The La Plata County case was confirmed Thursday in a backyard poultry operation flock. The flock was experiencing significant illness and was euthanized days before, the department said.

WELD COUNTY, Colo. — The State Veterinarian has issued a quarantine order for poultry in parts of Weld County after a deadly bird disease was detected at a facility there.

According to a report from the Colorado Department of Agriculture, the State Veterinarian's Office received a report of an unusually high number of chickens dying at a commercial egg laying operation in Weld County on April 28....

As Coloradans have begun to recover from two years of COVID-19, the state's largest foreign-animal disease outbreak has swept through flocks here, killing millions of birds and wiping out 65% of Colorado's egg-laying chickens.

A particularly virulent strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza has moved through North America since the end of 2021, and more than 40 million domestic birds in the United States have died sine the first case was identified in South Carolina in mid-January.

In Colorado, which had never seen highly pathogenic avian influenza before this year, more than 3.5 million birds have died in commercial and backyard flocks, the fourth-highest total in the nation, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Wild birds are dying, as well, and are the cause of the outbreak, said Maggie Baldwin, Colorado's state veterinarian. The disease began circulating globally in wild birds last year and is now widespread in that population, she said. Those wild birds, as they pass through Colorado and other states, "are leaving enough virus behind" to infect local birds, she said...

Bird flu detected at egg facility with 1.1 million hens

DENVER (KDVR) — Gov. Jared Polis declared a state of disaster emergency Thursday over the bird flu.

This comes after the highly pathogenic virus was detected at a commercial egg facility in Weld County, affecting around 1.15 million laying hens, according to the Colorado Department of Agriculture. The facility has begun “depopulation” of the flock and a quarantine area has been established.

Polis’ office said the declaration will allow state agencies “to coordinate for mitigation of disease spread, response, consequence management, and recovery efforts,” including by accessing state and federal funding...

Cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza — a disease that can wipe out an entire flock of birds in just three days — are once again on the rise in Colorado.

The National Veterinary Service Laboratory confirmed new cases of the bird flu at the end of September, including at an egg laying facility in Weld County with more than 1.1 million chickens.

On Sept. 29, another 35 birds in a backyard flock in Mesa County also tested positive and other cases have been confirmed in a red-tailed hawk in Larimer County and a blue-winged teal duck in Broomfield County.

These were the latest in the more than 4.7 million birds that have been impacted by the bird flu in Colorado this year, the third most cases of any state.

Most of those cases, including one in a Canada goose in Routt County, were reported this spring. The presence of the illness led to poultry being excluded at this year’s Routt County Fair...

The Boulder County Department of Public Health detected avian flu at a backyard poultry facility in Boulder County on Friday, according to a news release. The discovery prompted a quarantine order seeking to limit the movement of birds in and out of the area.

The discovery also prompted the Colorado Department of Agriculture to ask bird owners to increase biosecurity practices. Their recommendations include keeping a closed flock, decreasing interactions between domestic and wild birds and keeping feed away from wild birds...
