Mock flu epidemic will test Valley disaster preparedness

    Apr. 23, 2007 12:00 AM

Approval of a bird-flu vaccine last week gives a dose of reality to this week's pretend flu epidemic in Scottsdale.

The Coyote Crisis Campaign, a regional disaster preparedness project, is staging a mock flu pandemic today through Friday. Last year, planners faked a terrorist assault.

The drill will involve city, county and state governments, Luke Air Force Base, the Air National Guard, General Dynamics, Arizona State University and Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix.

The only part of the scripted mayhem to involve the public will be at Scottsdale Healthcare's Osborn and Shea hospitals.

Both hospitals will be locked down from 6:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Visitors and employees will be screened when they enter the facilities, as though in a real emergency.

The goal is to see how quickly the staff can process a large number of incoming patients.
