Correction: The number if new herds today is up 11 from Friday, not 13. Apologies. Still a big jump.

The @USDA is reporting as of today 80 herds have been infected with H5N1 birdflu since the outbreak was first spotted in late March. That's up 13 from their tally on Friday. New herds in ID (8), MI (4) & SD (1). Weirdly, USDA has MI at 24 herds. Michigan reports 23 total.

          • Our experience is that as the outbreaks spread the counts become less and less reliable. Personnel change. Counting procedures change. I consider the USDA count of known dairy cattle outbreaks an estimate. All government numbers are an estimate. Reporting is always a bit off especially as they climb.

What can be said here is that the USDA has a list of H5N1 test positive dairy cattle herds of less than 90 at this point.

Amid uptick in poultry detections, Minnesota reports first case of avian influenza in a dairy herd

H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in a Benton County dairy herd. Over the weekend the producer noticed clinical signs in only a handful of cows, the next day more than 40 cows had signs of fever. Samples collected from sick cows in the herd on Monday were sent to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory where the virus was detected. The USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed the results last night. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pasteurized dairy remains safe to consume.

“We knew it was only a matter of time before this detection would reach our doorstep,” said State Veterinarian, Dr. Brian Hoefs. “It’s important for dairy farmers to follow the example of this herd and test sick cows. The more the animal health community can learn about this virus today through testing and research, the better we can equip ourselves to prevent infections tomorrow.”

Dairy farmers should monitor their herd and contact their veterinarian immediately if cows appear sick. HPAI symptoms in dairy mostly affect late-stage lactating cows and include fever, a drop in milk production, loss of appetite, and changes in manure consistency. No matter the HPAI status of a herd, biosecurity can reduce the risk of disease spreading onto or off farms:
                • Consider stopping or delaying any cow movements and test for H5N1 before you move animals.
                • Milk any sick cows last, after your healthy herd.
                • Keep feed covered and clean up feed spills immediately.
                • Provide cows a clean source of water kept secure from wildlife, especially waterfowl.
                • Talk to your herd veterinarian if you notice any signs of illness in your animals.

Dairy farms are always required to dispose of milk from sick animals to remove it from the milk supply. In addition to the affected herd disposing of milk from sick cows and isolating them, the Board quarantined the entire herd for 30 days to reduce the risk of disease spread off the farm. After 30 days from the last positive test result, the herd can be retested to be released from the quarantine.

The risk to the public from this virus remains low at this time. People who work with or have direct contact with infected animals could be at risk of getting sick. The Board is working closely with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) on this response. MDH’s role is to monitor the health of people who have direct contact with infected animals and provide public health information and recommendations.

CDC recommends people who work with infected or potentially infected animals wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to help protect themselves from infection. More information is available on CDC’s website. Farmers can request PPE from MDH. Symptoms of avian influenza in people may include cough, sore throat, fever, red/watery eyes or discharge from the eyes. People who have questions can contact MDH at 651-201-5414.

The Board will report any new detections and updates on cow cases in Minnesota on its website. The Board has also seen a recent rise in poultry cases in the state with eight sites positive for the virus in May. Early investigations from some of those sites reveal birds were infected with the same virus strain detected in cows across the country.

                  • Exclusive: Cows infected with bird flu have died in five US states

By Leah Douglas and Tom Polansek

June 6 (Reuters) - Dairy cows infected with avian flu in five U.S. states have died or been slaughtered by farmers because they did not recover, state officials and academics told Reuters.
Reports of the deaths suggest the bird flu outbreak in cows could take a greater economic toll in the farm belt than initially thought. ...

In South Dakota, a 1,700-cow dairy sent a dozen of the animals to slaughter after they did not recover from the virus, and killed another dozen that contracted secondary infections, said Russ Daly, a professor with South Dakota State University ...

A farm in Michigan killed about 10% of its 200 infected cows after they too failed to recover from the virus, said Phil Durst, an educator with Michigan State University Extension who spoke with that farm. ...

In Colorado, some dairies reported culling cows with avian flu because they did not return to milk production, said Olga Robak, spokesperson for the state Department of Agriculture.

Ohio Department of Agriculture spokesperson Meghan Harshbarger said infected cows have died in Ohio and other affected states, mostly due to secondary infections.

The Texas Animal Health Commission also confirmed that cows have died from secondary infections at some dairy operations with avian flu outbreaks.
Officials could not provide figures for the number of statewide cow mortalities. ...

New Mexico's state veterinarian, Samantha Uhrig, said farmers increasingly culled cows due to decreased milk production early in the outbreak, before the U.S. even confirmed bird flu was infecting cattle. ...

LONDON — Finland is preparing to offer vaccines to people at risk of exposure to an avian influenza strain spreading among farmed and wild animals, health officials there said, potentially becoming the first country to take such a step as concerns about the threat the virus poses to people intensify.

The vaccine campaign will be limited, with doses set to be available to groups including poultry farmers, veterinarians, scientists who study the virus, and people who work on fur farms housing animals like mink and fox and where there have been outbreaks. ...

Mia Kontio, a health security official at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, told STAT the country was waiting for 20,000 doses to arrive, but planned to administer them “as soon as the vaccines are in the country.” ...

Finland is set to potentially become the first country to offer bird flu vaccine to people at risk of exposure to the virus.

took the unusual step of updating its list of #H5N1 #birdflu affected herds today, adding Wyoming (1) & 1 new Idaho herd to its list. It has been slow to update this list, so this is great to see. Someone needs to color in Wyoming on their site's map, however.

.@USDA added 3 new herds from Idaho to its list of H5N1 birdflu affected farms today. It still hasn't added Michigan's 25th herd or Iowa's 2nd; both were reported last week by the respective Ag Depts.
