Three Americans were found dead in a luxury resort in the Bahamas, and a fourth was airlifted to a hospital, according to authorities.

The guests died at the Sandals Emerald Bay resort on Exuma, and were identified as Americans by Chester Cooper, the Bahamas acting prime minister, who said foul play was not suspected. Cooper is also the nation’s tourism minister.

Hotel staff called authorities around 9 a.m. Friday morning with a report that a guest had been found unresponsive in one of the beachfront hotel’s villas, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

Police found the man lying on a bedroom floor with no sign of trauma. He was pronounced dead by a local doctor, police said.

Police were then directed to a second villa where a man was found slumped against a bathroom wall, also unresponsive. An unresponsive woman was found on a bed, police said.

They both showed signs of having suffered a convulsion, but no trauma, and were pronounced dead, police said.

The couple complained of feeling sick the previous night, and had been treated at a local medical facility before returning to the hotel, according to police, who said they were waiting for autopsy reports to determine the causes of death.

“And so, our team is still here to finalize those findings. But as far as we are concerned, as the medical team, our emergency medical team, because we thought we might have to make a makeshift facility, a mini-hospital; that’s proving to be not the case.

“We believe it’s an isolated situation that revolves around the four people that were impacted.”

As to the cause of the deaths, the minister said: “We have some ideas, but of course, we have to do toxicology. We need to do blood samples. And so, I don’t want to preempt myself, with making a statement that cannot be substantiated later on.

Bahamas calls on US labs to help solve deaths of 3 tourists

      By DÁNICA COTO

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Samples taken from three tourists from Tennessee and Florida who died at a resort in the Bahamas under mysterious circumstances have been sent to a lab in the U.S. to expedite results and help authorities understand what happened, officials said Monday.

The police commissioner of the Bahamas, Paul Rolle, said officials also collected samples from the rooms where the tourists were staying and the surrounding property to determine whether any contaminants were present.
      ...
He noted that all four tourists went to a doctor the night before their bodies were discovered and they had complained of feeling ill. He said they went at different times and had eaten different things.
      ...
The deaths come seven years after a Delaware family became seriously ill at a resort in the U.S. Virgin Islands. U.S. authorities determined that methyl bromide, a highly toxic pesticide banned for indoor residential use in 1984, was to blame and had been used at that resort several times.

IMPLAUSIBLE: AC contractor dismisses reports air condition leak caused Americans deaths

          LocalMay 11, 2022May 11, 2022 at 3:59 am Royston Jones Jr.
          ...
NASSAU, BAHAMAS — While a handful of international media outlets have attributed a “faulty air conditioner” to the deaths of three Americans at Sandals Emerald Bay resort last week, a Bahamian air conditioning contractor and specialist yesterday called those claims implausible.
          ...
“The refrigerant [causes] irritation, skin irritation if you’ve been exposed to it for a long time and it would have CHC which would deplete the Ozone layer, Chlorodifluoromethane,” said George Davidson, whose name has been changed at his request as he was not authorized to speak on the record.

He continued: “It can’t be the refrigerant. Remember now, modern air conditioning is throughout hundreds and thousands of buildings, hotels, the hotels that you stay in, and these have leaks. In this case, poison all two of them at the same time: That’s not possible. These are standalone units.

“Remember, these villas are very small villas — one-bedroom, two-bedroom villas, and that has a very small system, like a two-tonne that maybe has like four to five pounds of refrigerant.”

Davidson said with modern insulation requirements in The Bahamas, properties must have a fresh air inlet — a grill on the outside that pulls and circulates fresh air into an air-conditioned space.

As it relates to theories of carbon monoxide exposure, Davidson said the chemical could come from a water heater, or generator, but he was cautious not to speculate.

Speaking generally, Davidson said a source of carbon monoxide, i.e. generator fumes, cars, fumes from the exhaust, entering the inlet system “can be a possible cause for having a concentrated, high levels of or carbon monoxide coming into a space”.

Yesterday, Acting Prime Minister Chester Cooper said the autopsy on the deceased guests was completed — one of three reports needed to determine the cause of death.

It could take another three weeks, according to authorities, for the pathology and toxicology reports to be completed, with blood samples sent to Pennsylvania to expedite the process.

Minister of Health and Wellness Dr Michael Darville returned to Exuma with a team yesterday to further investigate the site, though the nature of those studies were not revealed.

Report says American tourists died of carbon monoxide poisoning in Bahamas; Sandals says incident was "isolated"

            BY ZOE CHRISTEN JONES

            MAY 27, 2022 / 1:23 PM / CBS NEWS

A Sandals Resort in the Bahamas has announced it will install carbon monoxide detectors in all of its rooms after three American tourists died from an unexplained illness, which it called an "isolated incident." The official toxicology report and autopsies have yet to be released, but local media in the Bahamas have reported that all three died from carbon monoxide poisoning, CBS Miami reports.

"Despite initial speculation, Bahamian authorities have concluded the cause was an isolated incident in one standalone structure that housed two individual guest rooms and was in no way linked to the resort's air conditioning system, food and beverage service, landscaping services or foul play," Sandals Resort said in a statement...
