That's according to reports from Kentucky radio station WRIL.

BARBOURVILLE, Ky (WYMT) - Officials with the state and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating a possible infectious disease at Barbourville ARH Hospital Tuesday.

In a release, Appalachian Regional Healthcare officials did not specify what disease they suspect it might be.

"We cannot comment on specific patient cases due to patient confidentiality," said ARH Spokesperson Melissa Cornett.

Currently, the hospital is open and accepting patients as normal.

"Barbourville ARH is working closely with the state health department and the CDC to follow all proper recommendations and current guidelines to ensure our patients receive the best of care, and others within our hospital remain safe," said Cornett.

Union College President Dr. Marcia Hawkins released a statement Tuesday afternoon regarding the patient in question. Dr. Hawkins confirmed that one of the Union College students is currently in isolation with ARH and that there is no immediate risk to the public...

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (WRIL/LEX 18) — A Union College athlete has been hospitalized and quarantined, reportedly for a hemorrhagic fever.

Staff at Barbourville ARH issued the quarantine shortly after the student came in for a physical.

Dr. Joshua Kadetz stated in an interview with WRIL that the student was quarantined with a hemorrhagic fever. He had not left the country over winter break, but he did have family members visit him from overseas.

Neither the hospital nor the college believe there is any chance for exposure or spreading of the illness. Staff members who treated the patient are being monitored.

The emergency room at the hospital is still operating normally...

Public Health, Barbourville ARH Issue Statement Related to Infectious Disease Investigation

Public Health, Barbourville ARH Issue Statement Related to Infectious Disease Investigation

FRANKFORT, KY (Jan. 14, 2020) – The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) and the Barbourville ARH Hospital are working closely with the local health department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate a potential case of an infectious disease. Close contacts of the individual have been identified and are being monitored.

“We want to assure Kentuckians we are aware of a potential infectious disease and are working collaboratively with the local hospital as well as local, regional, and federal public health authorities to determine not only a possible cause of illness, but any steps that need to be taken to protect the health and wellbeing of our Commonwealth,” said DPH Commissioner Dr. Angela Dearinger. “We do not believe the wider community to be at-risk and appropriate protocols were followed at the hospital to prevent exposure to other patients.”

Any threat to the general public is being assessed, but is believed to be extremely low. Additional information will be shared as details are confirmed. At this time, a diagnosis has not been made as health officials work to complete necessary medical and laboratory testing outlined by infectious disease protocols.

Barbourville ARH remains open, including the emergency department.

Anyone experiencing signs or symptoms of a viral illness, including fever, nausea, body aches, or lethargy, is encouraged to seek health care immediately.

DPH is following up to inform any hospital worker or close contact of the patient about symptoms to look for in case this illness turns out to be a risk to others.

Additional updates or information related to the investigation will be shared with the public as they become available, if needed.

Additional information is available at http://chfs.ky.gov/.

In regard to what may or may not be the cause of the Barbourville ARH ER quarantine involving a Union College student with a hemorraghic fever from earlier today.

We asked Dr. Joshua Kadetz in charge of the case: "Has the virus actually been identified?

            Dr. Joshua Kadetz replied:
"No, we are sending blood work with a special hazmat carrier to get tested at the CDC in Atlanta"

            Any speculation otherwise is unconfirmed.

              3 hrs ?
              Greetings, all,

I have been notified by the Health Department that one of our Union College students is currently in isolation at ARH. We have been informed that there is no immediate risk to the public. However, we will take every precaution to ensure the safety of our campus community. We have not been told the identity of the student.

Our student is undergoing tests to identify a virus. So far, we know that the student did not contract the Ebola virus, as has been speculated by posts on Facebook, and that it is not airborne. Also, I’ve been told that the student did not travel out of the country during the break.

ARH hospital is open for business and receiving patients.

We will continue to be in touch with the CDC and the State and Local Health Departments, and I will release information as it becomes available.
Of primary concern at this time is the fact that one of our students has been hospitalized. Please keep the student in your prayers.

              Sincerely,

              Marcia Hawkins, Ph.D.

Maisie Insko Nelson Matthew Byrd A representative with the health department told us this afternoon that the symptoms are not consistent with Ebola, which makes us believe it is being ruled out. Look, it’s very frustrating to hear a hospital employee do an interview with a local radio station and provide information that we have even been told. We hope to have some more information confirmed tomorrow so we can relay it on to our campus and community.

Union College We would never put our students or campus community at risk. Officials have not confirmed a diagnoses yet nor have representatives with the CDC, health department or hospital been on our campus to inform us that we need to be taking any special precautions, in fact the health department told us they don't believe the public to be at risk at all. Until we know more we will continue to clean our campus daily like we normally do with even more special attention to common areas.

CDC investigating Union College student’s illness

                ...
In a telephone interview with Brian O’Brien of The Big One 106.3FM WRIL radio, Barbourville ARH Emergency Medicine physician Dr. Joshua Kadetz, who says he worked a 2014 Ebola response for the Centers for Disease Control treating Ebola patients, had more to say about the situation at Barbourville ARH.

“We do have a young male, can’t release his name, he is in quarantine here with a potential hemorrhagic fever,” Kadetz confirmed.

When asked how the student became infected, he explained “Through history obtained, he didn’t go out of the country, but he had relatives that visited from West Africa approximately three weeks ago with a potential exposure.”

As for the potential of more individuals having been exposed, Kadetz replied, “No, we are confident that this is only transmitted by blood products or bodily secretions and is not airborne. So, no patient that was seen here at Barbourville ARH is at risk. Some employees did come in contact and we’re monitoring them closely, and everyone is presently healthy right now. The patient will probably be transferred down to Atlanta, Georgia.”
                ...
Correspondence with the CDC was not returned as of press time Wednesday.

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Officials with Union College said the student quarantined at Barbourville ARH Tuesday is doing much better Wednesday.

The student is already asking for Wendy's fast food and watching Netflix. But doctors still do not have a diagnosis for the possible infectious disease that brought officials from the state and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate.

WYMT was told doctors believe whatever the disease is would only be transferred through bodily fluids, but would not be easily passed by simply coughing or sneezing on someone.

UPDATE Please see below message from Marcia Hawkins, Ph.D. regarding hospitalized student:

                      Greetings all,

I am very happy to report that our hospitalized student tested negative for any infectious disease. A lengthy phone conference with the CDC and other health officials this afternoon confirmed that the student had been misdiagnosed. Early reports of infectious disease were circulated without confirmation and without approval of Barbourville ARH Communications Department. In other words, a great deal of fear and panic was generated without cause. The CDC and ARH will be issuing a joint statement.

The real victim in this scenario is our student. I trust our campus community will be the family to him that we profess to be.

                      Thank you,

(DPH) was notified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that all

Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notified Appalachian Regional Healthcare, Union College and the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) that all test results of a potential infectious disease case at the Barbourville ARH Hospital in Barbourville are negative.

Dr. Maria Braman, Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer for the ARH system, applauded the diligence of the Barbourville ARH Hospital emergency room staff as well as the CDC and the Kentucky Department for Public Health for their assistance in protecting the health and wellbeing of the communities Barbourville ARH serves.

“In medicine, it is our practice to always protect the patient. We test for the worst and hope for the best. We are relieved that is the case for this patient at Barbourville ARH Hospital,” she said. “The staff at Barbourville ARH took the necessary precautions for treating a potential infectious disease with the information they had, and this was not a misdiagnosis but rather a best possible outcome for this patient which we are relieved to report.”
