A third of ticks in NY carry diseases, Upstate Medical survey shows

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse, N.Y. – About one of every three ticks collected by the public and sent to a Syracuse lab this year were capable of spreading disease, according to Upstate Medical University.
Most of the infected ticks carried the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, but researchers also found several other diseases, including an emerging bacterial disease, referred to as miyamotoi, that was first identified in the Northeast in 2013.
“We are starting to see more miyamotoi,” said Saravanan Thangamani, who runs the Upstate lab. “It coincides with two patient cases in our county.”...
