Monterey County >> Almost a dozen sea lions in Monterey County have been diagnosed as infected with leptospirosis, a highly contagious bacterial infection that if not caught and treated in time, can result in kidney damage and ultimately, renal failure.

Officials at the Marine Mammal Center confirmed Tuesday that 24 California sea lions within a 600-mile coastal radius have tested positive for the condition that?s caused by a spiral-shaped bacteria called Leptospira. Because it?s spread by urine, dogs are also often at risk for being infected, as are humans.
