Omicron hospitalizations appear to be peaking in Louisiana; see latest COVID data

WWNO - New Orleans Public Radio | By Rosemary Westwood

Published January 25, 2022 at 9:53 AM CST
      ...
Hospitalizations appeared to have peaked at Ochsner facilities across the state on Jan. 11, at 726 people. That’s about a third lower than the largest number hospitalized during the delta surge on Aug. 9, when 1,074 patients were being treated at its hospitals.
      ...
The latest data from the Louisiana Department of Health buttressed the idea that omicron is waning.

On Jan. 19 there were 2,367 people hospitalized across the state. Monday’s data showed 2,127 people hospitalized, a drop of over 200 in less than a week.

That would leave delta as the worst surge Louisiana has yet witnessed. At the peak of the delta surge on Aug. 17, 3,022 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Louisiana.

If these trends continue, the omicron surge will have caused the second-highest rate of hospitalized COVID patients over the five surges seen in Louisiana since the pandemic’s outbreak.

The data show omicron, though a milder infection for many people, still proved serious for many, causing severe illness and clogging hospitals already suffering from staffing shortages.

As masks drop along Carnival parade routes, health expert warns, ‘Covid is still here’

          By Josh Roberson

Health educator Dr. Eric Griggs said watching the images from the first major Mardi Gras weekend in New Orleans since 2020, one might think there was no pandemic at all.

“From the looks of it, it seems like people think it’s over,” Dr. Griggs said. “I don’t see much masking. I don’t necessarily advise that.

“Covid is still here. Variants are still going around. People are still testing positive.”
          ...

Evidence of masking and social distancing to prevent the spread of coronavirus has been hard to come by on New Orleans Carnival parade routes so far this season.

LDH confirms 3 pediatric deaths from COVID-19

            February 22, 2022

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) sadly confirms three pediatric deaths of the Omicron surge. A total of 21 children under 18 years old have died from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic in Louisiana.

Two of the children were under 5 years old. The third child was between 5 and 17 years old. The deaths took place in the past week. There were 9 pediatric deaths during the Delta surge.

"Every life lost is a tragedy. That we have lost 21 children in our state to COVID-19, many of them not yet eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine, is unbearable," said State Health Officer Dr. Joseph Kanter. "Our young children who are not eligible to get the vaccine rely on us to protect them. While cases are declining from our Omicron surge, the risk is not zero. Families should carefully judge their risk and risk tolerance, particularly in the Mardi Gras season. Becoming fully vaccinated and boosted if eligible, wearing a high-quality and well-fitting mask, and avoiding crowds and indoor unmasked public spaces can increase a family’s protection and lower their risk.”

            ...

The Louisiana Department of Health protects and promotes health and ensures access to medical, preventive and rehabilitative services for all citizens of the State of Louisiana.

Indoor mask mandate will lift in New Orleans on Thursday morning

WDSU Updated: 2:39 PM CST Mar 2, 2022

                NEW ORLEANS —
Wednesday afternoon, New Orleans Health Department Director Dr. Jennifer Avegno provided an update on the city's COVID-19 mitigation measures.

Avegno has announced that due to low case counts and hospitalizations, the indoor mask mandate in New Orleans will be lifted beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday.

Mask requirements will remain in place in healthcare facilities and on public transit.

Avegno also said that if transmission levels remain low in New Orleans, the vaccine or negative test requirement will be lifted for businesses on March 21.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Two years after Louisiana reported its first confirmed death from COVID-19, Gov. John Bel Edwards said Monday that he will not renew his coronavirus emergency order which expires on Wednesday.
                    ...
The governor extended his emergency order last month, saying the state was "definitely on the downswing" of the Omicron variant's surge. The most recent renewal will expire on March 16.
                    ...
"Just because the proclamation is expiring, doesn't mean COVID is over," Edwards cautioned. "If the circumstances call for it, I will not hesitate to declare another emergency. But God Willing, we will never have to see such difficult mitigation measures in our state again."

The Louisiana Department of Health has reported 16,913 deaths linked to COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

NEW ORLEANS — Currently in the New Orleans area, about a quarter of the COVID cases are from a new subvariant of the Omicron variant.

So, what's the community status during festival season?

A lot of people are talking, and posting, and wondering did being around the nearly half-million people who went to the Jazz Fest spread COVID?

According to the city health department, waste water samples indicate increases in the French Quarter, Little Woods and St. Roch areas.

Dr. Fred Lopez, LSU Health professor of infectious disease, says this about the numbers.

“If you look at Orleans, and now St. Bernard, and Plaquemines Parishes, they're at high levels of community transmission,” Dr. Lopez said.

Avegno said wastewater treatment has also signaled a widespread COVID-19 in the community.
