  • Texas - El Paso imposes curfew as virus cases overwhelm hospitals

    10/27/20
EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Residents in the Texas border city of El Paso have been urged to stay home for two weeks as a spike in coronavirus cases overwhelms hospitals, prompting the state to dedicate part of the city’s civic center as a makeshift care center for the ill.

El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego on Sunday night issued a stay home order with a daily curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Violators could be fined $500 under the order, but the curfew does not apply to people who are going to or from work or out for essential services, including grocery stores and healthcare.

We are in a crisis stage,” said Samaniego, the county’s top elected official.

El Paso County to bring in 3rd mobile morgue as virus death toll grows

    Published October 31, 2020 5:10 pm
    By Jim Parker

EL PASO, Texas -- Two mobile morgues are currently in El Paso, and now a third one is on its way due to a significant increase expected in coronavirus deaths stemming from soaring infection and hospitalization rates.

"The County is currently working on creating more space at our Medical Examiner's Office parking lot so that we can get a third mobile morgue unit," County Judge Ricardo Samaniego announced Saturday on Twitter.

UPDATE: The El Paso County Medical Examiner's Office is now getting a fourth refrigerated mobile morgue as Covid-19 deaths continue to rise, with more expected as the numbers of hospital patients in ICUs and on respirators reached all-time highs on Sunday. "My understanding is that we just got our fourth one," County Judge Ricardo Samaniego
