Does Your Disaster Recovery Plan Need Updating?

Just as it should become regular practice to put new batteries in smoke detectors twice a year in your home, you should take your organization's disaster recovery or business continuity plan and update it at least once a year.

In addition, it's a good idea to check out online resources that are updated often, such as the following free information that you can access for assistance in your company's disaster preparedness efforts:

    1. This federal government website, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (www.ready.gov/business/index.html) provides a number of helpful publications that may be reviewed and downloaded as needed at no cost. Click on "Downloading and Ordering All Ready Publications" in the left menu.

Available documents include an "Every Business Should Have a Plan" brochure and booklet, which describes the contents of a preparedness plan; "Sample Emergency Plan" that is a template for a typical business continuity and disaster preparedness plan; and "What Does It Cost?," a one-page description of typical costs to a business for disaster protection and a business continuity plan.

    2. If your company and employees would like to be actively involved in the National Preparedness Month (NPM) to be held in September, visit www.ready.gov/america/npm08/intro.html for more information and to register to be part of the 2008 NPM Coalition.

    3. For weather-related disaster preparedness, visit The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) website section on Emergency Preparedness & Response, including natural disasters and severe weather at www.bt.cdc.gov. Some of the headings in the "Hurricanes" section include "Key Facts About Readiness," "Key Facts About Recovery," and "Environmental Concerns."

    4. For practical information and best practices regarding business disaster preparedness, as well as assisting with community, national, and international disasters, visit the Business Roundtable's Partnership for Disaster Response website at http://respondtodisaster.com.
