Clorox posts higher profit, confirms 2010 view

CHICAGO (Reuters) -

Clorox Co's (CLX.N) quarterly profit rose a stronger-than-expected 7.6 percent on Monday, boosted by price increases and lower costs, and the company stood by its fiscal 2010 expectations.

Clorox has held up in the downturn even though its namesake bleach and some other household items, such as Glad storage and trash bags, face increased competition from less-expensive store brands.

Products with a natural focus, such as Green Works household cleansers, have grown even as consumers cut back. Clorox disinfecting wipes sold well following the H1N1 flu outbreak.

Clorox earned $170 million, or $1.20 per share, in the fiscal fourth quarter that ended June 30, up from $158 million, or $1.13 per share, a year earlier. Analysts, on average, expected Clorox to earn $1.19 per share, according to Reuters Estimates.
