  • New coronavirus variant found in the Philippines - P.3 variant

Researchers in the Philippines have discovered a new coronavirus variant which belongs to the same lineage as the Brazilian variant, officials say, but there?s currently not enough data to determine whether it poses a public health threat.

The health department said in a statement Saturday that the Philippine Genome Center had recently found a unique set of mutations, including both E484K and N501Y mutations, in 85 cases. The number of confirmed cases has since risen to 98.

?Upon verification with the Phylogenetic Assignment of Named Global Outbreak Lineages (PANGOLIN), the said samples with these mutations have been reassigned to the P.3 variant, belonging to the B.1.1.28 lineage, to which the P.1 variant also belongs,? the department said.

P.1 is what is commonly referred to as the Brazilian coronavirus variant. Both P.1 and the new P.3 variants have mutations in the spike protein, including E484K and N501Y mutations. This raises concern about the potential for increased transmissibility and immune escape.

Philippines detects first case of COVID-19 variant from Brazil, confirms local variant

    13 Mar 2021 04:55PM (Updated: 13 Mar 2021 04:58PM)

MANILA: The Philippines on Saturday (Mar 13) reported its first case of the highly contagious coronavirus variant first identified in Brazil, while confirming nearly 100 infections of a new variant discovered locally.

A Filipino returning from Brazil tested positive for the P1 Brazil variant after 752 samples were sequenced at the genome centre, the health ministry said in a statement.

It also reported that 98 cases were of the similar P3 variant first detected in the Southeast Asian country early this month.

"At present, the P3 is not identified as a variant of concern as current available data are insufficient to conclude whether the variant will have significant public health implications," the ministry said.

Philippines detects P.1, announces P.3 variant from Central Visayas

      March 13, 2021

(UPDATED) The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday, March 13, 2021, announced that the P.1 variant (Brazil) of Sars-CoV-2 has been detected in the Philippines and the mutations detected earlier mostly in Cebu and Central Visayas have officially been designated as the P.3 variant.

The UP Philippine Genome Center (PGC) said the new P.3 variant, which was first detected in Central Visayas, has been "linked to possible increased transmissibility and immune escape in some studies."

... The DOH said the P.3 variant belongs to the B.1.1.28 lineage along with the P.1 variant. This has been verified with the Phylogenetic Assignment of Named Global Outbreak Lineages (Pangolin).

COVID-19: New Philippines-linked coronavirus variant investigated in England after two cases found

        Tuesday 16 March 2021 19:50, UK
        Sky News

Public Health England (PHE) is investigating a new COVID variant - previously reported in the Philippines - after two cases were found.

The variant - VUI-21MAR-02 (P3) - has been designated a variant under investigation, rather than variants such as another from Manaus, which is a variant of concern.

In a statement, the health authority said: "On 9 March PHE noted a report of 33 cases of a new variant reported by the Philippines."

It added: "The variant includes a number of notable mutations including E484K and N501Y, which are found in several other variants of concern.

"Public Health England has identified two cases of this variant in England. One of the cases is linked with international travel and the other is currently under investigation.
